I am watching the Olympics, not all of it, but when I see the we have failed or won I feel emotional involvement. So I asked myself why? I have no involvement in sports of any kind, sure I have had kids that played sports and supported them, but those days are long gone, I don't get involved in sports teams and the only thing I watch is the last day of golf on TV, even then I don't care who wins, it's just fun to watch the competition. So why the Olympic games bring out my pride of country, I just don't know but they do.

Your post reminds me that Olympics indeed emphasizes too heavily on individual countries with the playing of national anthems and raising of the flags. The Olympic spirit is supposedly to instill the message that "The important thing is not to win, but to take part" to create a togetherness to understand each other so that we can be living peacefully. But it seems that the gold medals make the winning countries to stand apart rather than be in a group with everyone else. Ironical don't you think?

There is definitely something in what you say. One may wonder where this patriotism stems from. I think it's the media that try to inject more competitiveness into Olympics. You can often hear that a particular country will do everything to succeed. Olympic games are far from representing togetherness of the countries involved.

I think we are just being too idealistic. There can never be any friendly matches when the competitiveness is so fierce. It is also because of this fierce competitiveness that is the factor that propels the sports to greater heights. So it seems that it is asking for the impossible for a keenly contested Olympic to show that 'we are the world'. Olympic is not the platform for togetherness.

They young people represent your and your country. I once heard that people who are not involved in sports still respond when their college team wins. In Wisconsin the University of Wisconsin get more donations for all departments when the football team plays in a bowl game.

Its your country we have have that feeling for our country , you don't want to see them fail . I am from a island and we dont take part in every even ate the Olympics and the little we do I dont want to see them fail because we dont do a lot already , we are too small .
The only time I watch sport is when Olympics is one , I think that's when most people do also . Olympics only keep every four year so maybe that's why your country pride , I dont care what my country do during everything else only at Olympics I would watch sport and get excited when I see my team .

I also feel the same way. Except I have two countries I feel for which is my own, and my parent's. In the end, I think it is because our country is what or where we know best and where our home is located. I am not into sports either but I am enjoying everyone's dedication, perseverance, strength, and passion in these games. It's very inspiring.

I feel the same. I guess it's a part of human nature. 1 part patriotism, 1 part nationak pride and 1 pride us want to cheer for someone so bad... and that results in identifying us with the olympics team of our country and feel devastation when "we" fail and feel utter joy when "we" win :).

I feel the same way. I believe even if you are not involved with sports at all you watch the different events that you like and you get excited. I was watching the volleyball yesterday between US and Brazil and I was going crazy screaming at the TV for them to make the right moves. Like they could hear me. YOu get so excited that you want the US to win big. Its quite emotional to watch when the US is receiving a medal whether its Gold, Silver or Bronze, expecially if they are in tears on the podium.

Hey i second you. It is such a moment of pride when you see participants of your own country playing and fighting in any sport. You get automatically attached with those players and start cheering for them irrespective of the knowledge of that sport and the score of that match.
