How do you choose a book to read? Do your friends recommend it, reading reviews or checking the book's cover?

Yes, I agree with you. I also borrow my friend's books. When I saw them reading theirs and giving positive comments about them, I borrow and read them too. Exploring is fun. I definitely agree with that. Happy mylotting.

Years ago before Amazon and technically downloading books to what ever device we have now; I would go to the used book store and check them out by title, reading the description on the back and maybe a few pages. Also I would pull them by the author, description on back and reading a few pages.
Now I get 99.9% of my reading material downloaded to my phone from Amazon. I type in the subject matter like 'historical romance' 'time travel' 'Amish romance' or 'mystery thrillers'. When the books come up I just scroll until I find an interesting title. I can read the description, and the first few pages of the book.
It has worked pretty well. I have gotten a few lemons but that use to happen at the book store and library too.
I'll tell you what I have learned by downloading. I make sure I'm not getting a 'Novella' I hate those things. You pay for pages, I mean literally pages. That's all the book consists of is about 60 pages a few more or a lot less. I saw one that only had 26 pages. I don't even want one of those for free. Some are pretty good and that's what makes them so bad. They have all this potential and you only get minuets of what could have been a fantastic story.

Oh, I guess it's great to download books from the Amazon. I don't have time to read right now but if I have some, I'll also try to download some. Thank you with this descriptive comment of yours. It's really helpful. Happy mylotting.

It's a combination for me. If friends happen to mention the great book they are reading, I find out more and if it sounds like something I would get into. Sometimes, it's specific author's work. If I'm looking at ebooks,I watch the recommendations that come up based on my searches. If I'm looking at regular books in online stores, I watch the "other customers have bought this also" or "you might also be interested in" as well as the personal reviews on the book I am looking at. I shop the thrift stores for books a lot. In that case, really different intriguing covers always seem to catch my attention. I check out what it's about and maybe even read a few pages to get a feel for the writing style if it is an unfamiliar author to me.
These usually work. It's very rare that I end up with a book I don't like.

Oh, so you sometimes also go by recommendations, by the authors, customers who bought the book or other related books, etc. Yes buying books from the book stores is good because you can read a few pages there as well as in online bookstores.Oh, I almost forgot, I also check the writing style of the author like you. If I'm interested with his or herstyle, I buy the book. Happy mylotting.

All of the above. I like recommendations from friends, but some of my friends read very different books than I do. But I read the Fifty Shades trilogy because of a friend's recommendation recently, so that was good. But sometimes my friends suggest books that I know I could never get into (romance or historical fiction - BIG YAWN!). Other times I generally just try out new authors, or continue reading some of my favorite authors (James Patterson & Lisa Gardner & Tami Hoag are my favorite crime novel writers - check them out if that genre interests you!). There are always more books to read. I find them at the thrift store normally for like $1 or less per book - it's a pretty awesome deal!

Oh, you consider all things mentioned above. Thank you for those recommendations. Yes, we sometimes avoid some genres. We have our favorites and we always try to consider new authors. It's worth to explore sometimes. Happy mylotting.

I have several favourite authors, and I tend to make my first selections from those. Next, I'll go on friends' recommendations - it's how I came to read '50 Shades of Grey,' and I'm so glad I did. Finally, if I have nothing else to go on, I'll read the cover blurb, and make my selection that way.

When I was younger I had favorite authors too. I always collected their books. I always checked if they have books available. However now, I go by recommendations or pick books by random. Happy mylotting.

I choose the book not primarily by its cover but for me it's the contents that really matters. Something which I'm interested. I like to buy old, worn-out books as long as it's in mint, readable condition.

I agree with you. Some old books are really fun to read. I always check books on sale. Even they look too old, I still buy them if their contents are interesting enough to read. Happy mylotting.

I love reading, and there are many ways that I might choose a book. Sometimes when I don't have anything to read I will just go to a library and pick up a book at random and start to read it just to see if I like it. I have found many amazing books using this method, so it is something that I would recommend. You have to know when to stop reading if the book is annoying you though, as it can be hard to give up on one. I always listen to things that my friends and family have said as well; if they've enjoyed a book I will give it a go as they often have the same kind of tastes as me.

I also pick books by random sometimes. I also prefer books that are recommended to me. They are already tested. LOL. Happy mylotting.

I choose the book to read myself. Although I receive some advices from friends on the books that they have read, most of the time I will find out that their taste or preferred genre is not suitable to my own preference. What I usually do is I search on the net for reviews about books on a particular subject or plot that I want, I make a list then I check the book out by reading a couple of pages. If I like how the author plays with the plot and constructs it, then I will read it.

Oh, yes I agree with you. Reading reviews, making lists, reading a couple of pages, the plot and the constructions are the things that we consider in buying books. Very well said. Happy mylotting.

Ah, so scanning the pages, choosing by the author and genres help you in choosing the books you want to read. I also do that too. I also scan the pages when I buy some pocket books. LOL. I like romance and mystery books. I also like comedies and adventures sometimes. When I buy two to three, itdepends on my mood what to read first. We are somewhat alike. Happy mylotting, Sir.
