My son

I had a really emotional day .How do the young people today cope with everything. They try hard at school and gain good qualifications ,get their hopes up then go into the world. What a shock for them .I was jumping for joy last week as my son found himself a job ,it turned out to be a fake job.He worked 45 hours for this sales firm and earn't nothing. He was told he would have a basic wage and then the commision would be added if he sold anything. He stuck it out hoping to be able to make a sale but it never happened. How can employers do this to young people, brain wash them, send them out, knowing they don't stand a chance. It has broke our hearts to see what it has done to him.He went for his pay cheque only to be told it was commision only.Nothing the lad ended up with nothing..I took him to town today to cheer him up with new trainers and a few treats. His dad has given him some pocket money. He is 18 how sad is that.

Hi, I feel very sorry about your son. But we parents have to support and encourage them in the difficult times. It is good that you took him to town for cheering up. Such type of incidents make us frustrating. But we should have positive attitude. Your son will get another job soon.

suzzy3: Yes. I am also of the same opinion -- parents should support -- but we can't be going along with our children all along. they will have to carry their role. the children will have to learn to face negative experiences, people, world.

I have sat and cried for him.He does not want to sit on the dole and take.Angry is not the word.I told him to stop he was getting ill.He was even going to hand his notice in properly and I told him not to bother you owe them nothing.A really hard lesson learn't for him.He is looking again and I am sure it will not be long before he fixes himself up with something else.He did say he was thinking of agency work ,stop looking for full time.To be honest when he signed on at the dole they only had one job to offer him so he has applied for it in an office. One job in all of Maidstone and chatham area how sad is that.

Hi suzzy.. I am not a mother and yet I experienced what your son undergo. I got a job from a company and it all turned out a scam, it really broke all my hopes and dreams on it. When I told my mom about this, she felt bad and told me that it will be one part of my life that I can learn lessons from. She didn't treat me for something, she just give me a comforting words of wisdom.. I guess the thing that you did with your son is really good, I think that as a mom we are always there for our children no matter how hard and easy they've experiencing, giving them courage and supporting them no matter what is the best thing to do. Sooner or later your son will be stronger because of that incident, I hope he'll be okay and be as alert as possible for those people who intends to no good to him.

OMG how horrible for him and you guys. Here he is trying to do the right thing and the employer does this to him. This will unfortunately show him how cruel people can be and not to trust anyone again. I feel so bad for him. Here he is thinking he's making money and to find out he didn't make a dime. What happen to the basic wage and why would they tell him such a story. I would report the company to the Better Business Bureau if you live in the States. This is not acceptable and they should be reported. I will pray that your son gets over this and finds himself a legimate job that he loves and earns good money.

I agree with you the world is not what we think it should be. Growing up as a child you think the world will treat you right if you are a good person. Then you get a rude awakening when you realize the corruption of it all. At 55 years of age I have found that their is nothing but corruption throughout the world from Government to the smallest company. My heart goes out to the young and innocent who have no idea what type of world we live in. Its a very sad state of affairs in my opinion. I'm glad he is getting over it and I hope and pray he finds something soon. God Bless!

It is sad, but that's the harsh reality of life. People don't really care that much about ethics and what's right or wrong as long as there's business going on, of course there will always be exemptions. These kind of people or employers will do anything they can possibly and "legally" can to lower down their operational costs for more income. Being young and inexperienced, the kids or first timers are often the victim because they will just accept anything that was told to them for want of a steady flow of income with hopes to suck it up for awhile, build contacts and experience before looking for something better. I also went through employers who took advantage of me being a newly graduate and have little to no knowledge of how much I'm supposed to be getting paid or up to what extent my responsibilities are. I have experienced rendering extra extra hours of work without any pay just because "I am a new hire".

The trouble is like you say there are so many people out their searching for work chasing so few vacancies on in our area. Some employers are bs and take advantage of young people.I just hope this situation does not continue for too long.Take care and I wish you luck in your future.

i am an employer personally, and i have had positions like that being floated through my firm, see the thing is in sales related jobs companies need to see if the person they are hiring can actually generate revenue. too many times it happens that if the sales job is high pay, everyone who is not even qualified and does not possess the skill will come and join, and those who actually make sales they are fixed on basic pay and commission. since you are related to him you are hearing one side of the story, the fact of the matter is employers can not cheat employees, everything is agreed mutually before the beginning of the job, the problem arises when potential applicants think they are better than they actually are in fulfilling the requirements of the job.

Thank you for your reply. My son is like so many vunerable young people in the job market .So keen to get a job maybe he did not really listen as well as he should have.He was sold a dream.I am not saying you personally take these young people for a ride with stories of great riches ,I bet if someone had sat him down and told him he would only get one sale from a hundred and fifty pitches ,he would probably not earn anything for three days or that he was training and his manager would swoop in and take his sale after my son had done the pitch he probably would not have bothered. The way I see it the managers of these sales firms have brain washed so many young people into beleaving in the dream they actually beleave it themselves.Only a few people make money doing sales like this and they are the ones at the top and there are not so many of them.He turned out with polished shoes and smart clothing he walked in the blazing heat,he was dropped off miles from home and worked his socks off,he knocked on door when mothers were putting their kids to bed,he was given doors where people were rude to him,he did not give up till he realised he had worked 45 hours with no pay.I do sincerly hope you do not associate with companies that act in this way.He is educated to a high level,he has been raised not to suffer fools.I am extremely upset and maybe someone in your industry could set up a commission to weed these crooks out.He was vunerable and has learnt his lesson well.It broke out hearts to think that he was out there on his own trying to make his way .Not sit at home on the dole but try to make something of himself,He was taken for a ride and thats what has really upset me and my husband.Sorry to have vented so much.

You are in UK and this has happened in that place. If the candidate is told that he will be paid only commission and not salary then it is ok. Otherwise it may cause disappointment for your son. But we have to bring up our children to face negative experiences also.
