Many other religions teach fasting. Some of it is slightly different in that nothing is given up other than food and drink except water. Others are more strict. The best teaching about fasting in my opinion is the one where it's left up to the individual and God. We can pray and know that He guides us to the fast that He wants for us. We are not to tell others when we fast because that's a kind of boasting and only occasionally does the entire congregation fast together. When we do it's for a specific reason like elections or a local problem.

Hi Tushavi, Fasting is also found in the Christian church, especially among Catholics and Anglicans, two of the largest denominations. Fasting is much talked about in the Bible and taught by Jesus Christ. For some reason certain Christian groups ignore it. Blessings.

No, many other religions fast and even non-religious people fast. In my religion (Jehovah's Witnesses) we choose when we want to fast or if we want to fast or how long we will fast. It is left up to the individual to decide for himself as to what he will do when it comes to fasting. All the best! .

The whole discussion shows that there are lots of same things in all the religions. one of them was discussed "Fasting". what do you think what are the other things which are same in the religions. for example we celebrate the birthday of our Prophet Muhammad PBUH. and you?

"we celebrate the birthday of our Prophet Muhammad PBUH" This heresy, not the Prophet peace be upon him , nor companions celebrated by.

no... not really. catholics do that too... but not that long. i think the longest is seven days. the catholics do not really relay on the sun... it's really giving up something that you really like to do for the whole year in seven days... some might give up eating something like sweets... other would not eat meat. some would only eat a bread for a whole week. but others don't do fasting they would just nail themselves on a cross... or whip themselves til you can see blood dripping.

Good day Tushavi, With reference to your post, well, fasting is not only in Islam. As we also observed this being a Christian. But, the fasting that we are doing is somehow different to each other. Hence, there are some beliefs being observed in two different religion. Though I believed we only have one God. Only the observance is different. I do also have some friends who are Islam and I respect how they do their fasting. Thus, being under an Islam or Christianity, respect must be observe.

Most religions practice fasting in one way or another. Ramadan is specific to Islam.

Christianity has fasting, Judaism has fasting.

Christians also do fasting but the different is that we do not follow any schedule. Fasting can be done anytime but it is especially done during those times that you want to ask God for something or blessings.

In the LDS religion people fast on the 1st Sunday of each month. It also means taking a break from food and drinks for spiritual and physical health; however, there are no restrictions on personal interaction with spouse.

I am a Roman Catholic and yes we practice Fasting or Abstinence during Lent, as an act of penance for our sins. lent which falls at a different time every year is the season of penance and prayer which starts on ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday, before Easter Sunday. For us, fasting is an act of reducing food intake , some may or may not abstain from meat or other foods.
