Dieting helps one lose weight which may result in a figure not so pleasing to the eye. But Yoga does it differently. It takes care of that part of the body that needs slimming and there are several postures specific to one's needs. Besides shaping one's body Yoga also helps maintain good health.
What has been your experience with Yoga?

I've read good things about Yoga and I'm really hoping I could find a Yoga class near my place. If not, I'd probably get an instructional video that I could use at home. Do you think it's fine to do Yoga by yourself at home, with just a video instructor? I'm concerned that I might strain my body badly if I do the wrong stunt.

First and foremost Yoga has gentle postures and not stunts as you call them!. I went through an instructor and would advise you to do likewise. Each one's needs are different. The yoga instructor will give you proper guidance

So you had your personal instructor? How much did it cost?
The pictures I saw of Yoga enthusiasts looks harder than that of pilates. I'm doing pilates right now, with video instructions only. And, it seems fine.

I was taught 3 breathing exercises which are called pranayams, and six postures - very easy ones. Those days it cost me a mere thousand rupees.

I was suffering from severe knee pain. I joined yoga and withing one month and that too with simple yoga exercise, I was cured of that. If you practice yoga regularly, you are going to be a fit person soon and the stamina will also go up. I am always for yoga.

It is sad that this therapy has not got the publicity it deserves. Unlike aerobics yoga is not rushed and the results are definite.

What you say is true.Dieting alone would make us lose flesh in the wrong places and we would only look sick with hollow cheeks and sunken eyes.On the other hand physical exercise along with diet may help.I learnt yoga but I confess I am indisciplined here.I have all good intentions of doing exercises but I get up late and just die for tea the first thing in the morning. And then sometime goes away reading.THen it becomes sunny[all excusses allknowing!.
Earlier I used to do it regularly and my experience is good.
I have to try and get back the routine. In the meantime I have to satisfy myself with some long walks .

I can no longer do those poses that involve twisting and stretchin, due to my accident. But I do physiotherapy instead which is equally effective. Kala you can do pranayams any time of the day - they provide oxygen which is so necessary for our well being.

One should take the help of a guru in the initial stages as it is not good if one does not know how to go about it.
