So I am new on here as well and I just noticed a plus and a negative sign and an exclamation point and had no idea what this was. I then noticed the stuff that I had written only had an exclamation point. So you're saying that people should rate what other people have to say. If they liked what you had to say or think that you made a good point then that is a positive. If they didn't like what you had to say they could leave you a negative (mmm sounds so much like ebay it isn't even funny). People could leave you a negative simply because they can. This really doesn't sound like a very fair system especially when not everyone is aware of it. So what is the point really if you don't want to offend anyone I mean we're all different right from all different backgrounds and from different nationalites so why do we want to be little boxes on the hillside and we all look the same? Why would you want to be a conformist? I just don't get it and I never got it in psychology either -- you're saying you are rewarded for pretending to be someone you're not -- keep your opinions to yourself then how can this be used as a positive thing? How can people grow or how can people see a argument from another person's view point? Why is it okay for lawyers to be able to argue from both sides and be rewarded by persuading the jury or judge? I am trying to understand the reasoning behind mylot?

We are not on Facebook here and the +/- signs are not for liking or disliking a post-
Read here to see how to use the rating system correctly:
http://www.mylot.com/o/faq/faq17.aspx#2
The system is absolutely fair. It is people that are not and many of them, like yourself, do not read the instructions that myLot give us and do their own thing here
We all see only the ! on our own posts because we cannot rate them and the ! is there so that we can report our post if there is a problem (such as a connection error causing a duplicate post).
By the way, until you have a user activity rating of 100 you, and everyone else, cannot rate. This is to avoid misuse of the rating system and hopefully give new users the chance to understand how to rate by that time.

Well the reputation thing here mostly is based on how well your discussions and responses to others is. It is actually something a lot of people have to improve on when they first are getting started here. They usually base this with quality over quantity. If you take time and make sure your discussions here are at least always 4-5 lines in length as well as your responses back in discussions as well. Just remember to stick to the topic at hand, and have fun. Don't let it bother you too much and good things will happen.
