Hi, I know that this is a dumb question that looks like as if I'm just trying to ask just to make money here for this one meaningless question. I wanted to post this some other place just so no one here won't think its just because I want to earn on this one but I don't where to post this question without getting bad or insulted answers (as its a meaningless question). This is the only place that answers question with no insults (in this site, when one knows they wont answer, not even bad comments, lol). I wanted to ask though about a question between the word "hurt." Is there any other words that the word "hurt" can be used? Okay this my question. I used to think that if someone hurts you by, say, punching, slapping, kicking you, etc, meant you are getting hurt "physically," and when they hurt you by name calling like "you are a retard," stupid, dumb looking, etc, I thought that meant hurting you "mentally." Am I wrong on both or maybe on one. Could I be right on both? Lol, I've been wondering this for a while though. How would you say when someone hurts you by literally touching you (punches, slaps, kicking you, etc) and hurting you by calling you names (you're retarded, worthless, dumb, stupid looking, etc)? Is there a word that you would use "hurting" for each example? Do you guys/ladies know exactly or kind of know what I'm trying to ask?
Thanks

I think when you asked, "Is there any other word that the word hurt can be used?, you are actually asking if you can use the word HURT but not mean it in the same manner. Like say you are hurting me, but you mean you are making me feel good. Like saying a word but not in it's appropriate meaning. Like saying cold when you mean hot. I don't know if I got you right, but if that's what you meant, the word HURT is difficult to apply for a different meaning. It's also difficult to replace with other words. Even I now, am not sure, if I'm doing my comment any justice explaining my understanding this way! Lol

'Hurt' is used indiscriminately to mean both physical and mental or emotional harm. Often the meaning is clear from the context.
"He was hurt in the fight" vs. "His harsh words hurt me badly"
There are many other synomyms which can be used to describe or specify the type or seriousness of the harm done. Some of them apply to physical harm while others express emotional or mental pain.
Look at the definitions and the synonyms given here: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/hurt and the meanings and usage may become clearer.

You are right. You can hurt a person physically and emotionally. Physically because you punched him or slapped him, etc. Emotionally because you called him stupid, etc. You "hurt" his feelings. Another one is to hurt someone morally. For example, you've been involved in a "scandal." That's moral suffering.
