I am guitar lover though i do not how to play it. I always wanted to learn but never got time. Whenever i hear someone playing a tune, my mind is gets focused to that only & i forget my work, my surroundings, everything. Though i am so passionate about it yet i never got time to even hold that instrument before. Now i have got one so i am eager to learn. So i want to know everything about it. How much time it will take to learn to play a simple tune.

Maybe if you are a fast learner and your fingers are good in strumming the right chords, how about three hours? haha... I was a beginner too before and I was able to play one song and that was "Leaving On a Jet Plane." I didn't continue learning but I want to learn again someday. It's quite difficult.

Hello. I was in a situation like you before. I can't say for sure for how many days you'll be able to learn everything about it but if you're persistent and you put your mind to it, you can learn it the fastest way. As you've mentioned, now you have the time to do it, I suggest keep on practicing. First choose a song which has simple chords then try to learn more chords each day. In that way, you can improve your skills and you'll be amazed one day that you can do it without the help of a songbook. Good luck!

Your valuable response is helpful & encouraging. Thank you very much. As you say try to pick up a song with simple chords & learn each day. Is that really enough or i have to find an expert to teach me. Can we do it at home simply without any expert help.

I don't quite know how many days you will learn playing guitar, and it is also depends on how long your fingers can take to hold the strings. When I am also a newbie, sometimes it would be painful to hold the strings that's why I can't practice as much as I want. Sometimes if your force your fingers it will just lead you to wounds so don't do that. It would just take you longer. Try asking your friends who know how to play guitar. I guess, my best tip would be try learning and mastering first one song. Play it, sing it and then when you master it it would just be so easy for you to learn the different chords. Goodluck!

Hear guitar music from legends like eric clapton and bob marley. This would inspire a and ignite an innate ability to learn music. Infact a plethora of vide lessons are still availabe in youtube for fre. with justin guitars and one stop learning , learning music is now not a big deal

It all depends on ur speed of understanding of music and its nuances. The basic method of learning is to master the notes of music. It pretty simple to know the notes. It better to learn the kepyboard styles rather than going for sheet music. This would give you a feel of guitar playing and you would be comfortable and confident in playing a couple of songs within a couple of months. In short once u feel u have a good knowledge of dese you could switch to a sheet music.

I was a self leaner and I never had a teacher or somebody to teach me or to show me how too.
All you need is a guitar and a chord book. Then you look for the guitar tab which are easy to play and have only 3 or 4 chords for a start. I learn by playing song from Nirvana 'Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sunbeam' which only using chord C, D and G.
Then I slowly play a song with different chord and more challenging. Then I try to understand the chord family and try to play lead and solo. Now even after seldom play I can still play quite well.
To be able to play will take a week or so. To master it, there is no time limitation because the skills are limitless.

keep yourself motivated and stay determined.
learning to play the guitar needs loads of practice. there is no other way. unless you are a born musician.
develop a ear for listening and listen to songs with good guitar music.
stay focused and concentrate.
i think it should take 3-4 months for you to play chords and another 2 months to play songs that have notes already.
another 6 months to come up with your own chords for new songs.
you can learn a simple tune in 10-15 days but that's a shortcut really. go the right route and take it slow.
after all you don't want to stop after learning a simple tune, right?

It depends on lot of factors like:
1] Your ability to pick up
2] Your sense of music.
3] Number of hours you practice.
4] And how advanced do you aim to be in playing.
Music is like education. A child learns to read and write in around 4-5 years. But thats not the end. There is so much more to learn, diplomas, degrees, etc etc.
Similarly in music, regardless of the instrument, you may learn all the chords in a year or so, but chords aren't the only things to learn in guitar. There's so much more.
So if by playing the guitar, you mean only the chords, then a year would be sufficient. But if you wanna learn classical guitar, and make the guitar sound the best it can and get degrees and stuff, atleast 8-10 years, i would say.

I think it would be about one year until you quiet good at guitar. You can just start it by finding a simple song, such as twinkle-twinkle little star. Learn to read the chart and the chord. And also you must learn all basic guitar key, such as C, G, C minor, C major, and etc.
Beside that, I think finding a private guitar teacher will give you more than just practicing alone. It might be more expensive, but you can learn faster!

If you are a quick learner then it will take you a matter of weeks and also it depends on how much time you are going to devote to the instrument. All in all if you want to play a simple tune then it could take two days to get it absolutely perfect but at the end of the day it just depends on how much time you are going to devote to it.
I look forward to seeing you on stage playing in a band in a few years time ;)
