Hey there everyone! I just very recently started watching ice hockey.. I like it because it's kinda like football.. but what I want to know is when do you get a foul? I mean in football if you push someone or pull someone that's a foul.. But pushing is allowed in hockey (or is it?). So I was wondering when they get fouls.. or are there no fouls? Thanks :D

Welcome New Fan! Yes Hockey is like soccer/football but there is legal contact. But you can't use your stick to hit a guy. The most common penalties are the cross check and the slash. A Cross check is when a player holds his stick with both hands and pushes his stick in the small of the back of another player. A Slash is when a player uses a chopping motion on another's stick. But these days the worse penalty is boarding. This is called when a player pushes a player into the edge of the rink in a way where the players head hits the glass first or if he was falling and his shoulder goes in. The rule Every player should heed is is he can see All of the back of a player. I mean he can read his name on his sweater, sweater is the hockey player's kit, then he shouldn't hit him. These are the main ones. Here is a cross check. See how he has Both hands on the stick. This is a no-no. ps. when these penalties happen, the guilty go to the penalty box for 2 minutes or until the other team scores, meaning his team is down a man. This is called a powerplay. If the penalty is Extremely harsh , the player could get a major penalty, meaning he is off the ice for 5 minutes. And in these 5 minutes the other team can score as many times they can, he remains for all five minutes.

This is a slash. The guy in white made a chopping motion. It landed on the other guy's arm. A Big No-no.

Hey there sarahruthbeth22!
Thanks so much for taking the time to tell me these rules! Do you play hockey yourself? And wait, can I ask another question.. When you substitute someone out of the game can you put that same person back again?
Hopefully, I'll continue watching hockey and become a fan.. :D
Thanks again.
