As mothers we've all been there, waiting for our children to arrive home from the first day of school. Listening to the details of how the day played out, getting reacquainted with old friends, why they don't like their teachers, how awful the lunch was and filling out those dreaded school forms in triplicate. Just when you thought all the excitement and chaos had died down out comes the LIST. The 37 item list we have somehow seemed to forget about, the list that causes us to run from store to store finding the item everyone student has to have, and the list that if you listen to her kids you have to have by bedtime that night, it's the school supply list. Remember when we went to school, a simple notebook, paper and a writing instrument and we were set, how did we ever manage to get through all 12 years of school without pens that light up. What has happened to the school systems with the lists of must have items, does a second grader need a scientific calculator really, what do you mean my kid kindergartener needs 5 different colors of highlighters, glue dots, what are glue dots and you're telling me my 9 th grader has to have universal athletic shoes as well as posture enhancing socks. Who thinks up thinks up this lists, are all these items really needed to ensure my children get a proper education. Is my child right, did the teacher really say that Tommy Hilfiger makes the best backpacks or that the 432 count box of crayons makes them color better. Are there really 432 different colors of crayons? Teachers and schools have really gotten out of hand the last few years with these list of supplies. Are the really essential for learning or making the grade? Don't they realize we have just emptied out our bank accounts for the latest fashion trends, hair fashions and the best Transformer lunch box in town? Enough with list already, we've done our part, didn't they show up. Don't teachers have children of their own or take into account we might be at our spending limit? Where are we suppose to dig up another 50.00 or more dollars for these school accessaries? Because after everything else, we do pay their salary!

we have a daughter entering grade 10 this year as well as a daughter going off to college. you think entering highschool is bad, just wait til your kids hit college.
my daughter had to pay (well we ended up paying) $50 just to be considered and put in the lottery for a dorm room (yes, i said lottery). it seems in college they just bleed you out of all your money.
