I babysit my three year old neice everyday and her mother is adamant against putting her in preschool. She comes up with all kinds of excuses but it boils down to the fact that she doesn't want to bother. Since she's going to be starting school a little behind others her age, I'd like to start to work with her some. Problem is, I have no idea where a preschooler her age should be educationally and I need some ideas on things to do with her. This is where you guys come in!! Suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hello angle and welcome to myLot. Really you want to put your niece of three old in nursery school. Why is every one in such a hurry to have these babies grow up? I raised two of my grandchildren. The older one my granddaughter was ready to learn to read at age four but her maturity for school was not there. We had a hard time getting her to do her home work was terrible. Grandson was not ready either. I worked and worked with him to learn his alphabet for over a year and he couldn't get it. When it time time to register him for kindergarten the teachers told a group of parents that not all kids learn to walk at the same exact age. It is the same way with learning not all kids are ready for school just because they turned 5. She offered to test the kids to see if they were mature enough to be ready for school. He failed the test. I wish we had known about the test for my own kids and my granddaughter. I believe they all would have had an easier time in school if they had waited. I know my grandson learned so fast the next year. School was so much easier for him.
You can start by teaching your niece the alphabet and how to write them as well as her counting. The months of the year and seasons. teach her to write her name, address and phone number her dad and mom's name her colors too. Have her color in coloring books to learn to stay in the lines. That will help her with hand eye coordination.

I want her in a nursery school because she has absolutely no interaction with children of her own age, just adults. And it would be fine if someone was working with her a little for education but there has been absolutely no attempt made for this and that's where I want to help her. She doesn't have the social skills a lot of kids have when they play with others and I would like to see that. She sees kids when we go out and it's like she's seeing a wild animal, she is so enthralled.

Age 3 to 4 is suitable for preschool or a nursery education. Your niece could be tested on colors, 2d shapes, numbers, sounds and letters of the alphabet. She could work with Lego to make things. She could be helped with simple cooking. You could do some leaf rubbings with crayons and make some paintings of the leaves found. She could do some simple problem solving. Good luck.

Preschoolers learn best through play, so play based activities are best. You can do rhyming songs to start teaching her letters and numbers and you can paint or color to teach about colors. You can use puzzles, flash cards, or toys to teach shapes and colors and help her see and point out shapes and colors wherever you go.
I believe preschool is important, not just for the learning that goes on but for social skills and for young kids to get used to having a teacher and being away from parents. It was clear which kids did NOT go to preschool when my daughter was in kindergarten, the non-preschool kids had a lot of attachment anxiety, they had shorter attention spans, they missed their parents, and many of them were NOT able to write their names or not legibly, they couldn't count to 30, they didn't know all their shapes or colors. I'm not saying that ALL kids who don't go to preschool fall into this category but most of the kids who did go to preschool were advanced at the start of kindergarten vs being merely proficient or below average.

In pre schools here the children do art, as in painting, this is also a fun way of teaching a child colours.
Another thing children like doing is counting and this is taught by using money, as in how many coins.
Shoe lace and large holes on buttons are also used to thread to help with hand and eye co ordination.
Crayons or pencils as well to draw shapes and child safe scissors to cut them out promotes hand and eye co ordination.
These are the things that most, if not all pre schools do, hope that helps you a bit.

My daughter is 2 1/2, we bought her flash cards OF ALL THE ANIMALS and body parts of humans you know nose, elbow, knee, etc. she especially likes the alligATOR, and rhino. Then you can show her the Discovery channel and here we have a channel called Baby tv that has counting and animals. My daughter really likes it,and the music they play is classical. Take a look. Any good luck.

A good nursery rhyme or song will be good for them. It will make them remember things especially those that were used in the song. You can invent a tune and come up with a song with the number, colors, shapes and every little thing she can say is. You can also teach her using her favorite toy, like do a roll playing and incorporate those things you want her to learn. Hope you have fun!

That's so sad to hear, that her own mother is the one who hinders the kid's learning.
Anyway, my mom is a teacher and she suggested teaching numbers 1-10, the basic primary colors, and the use of "please" and "May I" through story books. She also said that orienting her with the basic school supplies and what they are called is also a basic lesson for preschoolers.
