I used to use so much of short cuts to text messages and on facebook that I actually forgot the correct spelling of some words. Now I am becoming better because we have to right the correct spelling here and no shot cuts. I am thankful to mylot. have you noticed this as well if you were using short cuts?

Even with the trend of text words or text speaks, I still prefer spelling the full word. I often get teased on by my colleagues because they say I text like someone who is new to text messaging. I just nod and smile; maybe it's just me or I am just not fond of doing shortcuts and still prefer the proper spelling.
I have younger siblings that are still in school, so I guess that is one of the major reasons why I have to use the proper spelling all the time, have to set a good example as the eldest sister.

I am readin English for probably 54th year or so. Even then I come across new words -- either they are really new to me or i have forgotten those words--I have online dictionary cambridge -- and i check the meaning and spelling occasionally,

Yes i do have noticed. Now a days people have forgotten the original spelling because everybody is having a habit of short messages thru sms on mobile while chating on net. Anyway whatever you are doing is good. I am not against the short cuts but proper care should be taken as to our English language is not spoiled.

Riyau, indeed Mylot is a good place for you to learn to upgrade your English. Try to spend more time in here and i am sure you will be able to improve your English. I saw quite a few foreign friends who said they had improved their English writing through here as well. Hope you will be able to improve your English as well.

Sms really messed us up - it makes us dumb =). I used to be really good in spelling too. But now there were days that I have to stop and think if what I typed in or wrote down is correct or not. =) I do think that if we keep on writing blogs, participate on discussions here on mylot - then it'll really be a great help for us to be good in spelling again.

Well thats awesome to hear that mylot is helping with your spelling along with earning you money that is a definite bonus. I do annreviate some words such as definitely I write def. It is just faster to write that and sometimes the spelling of it confuses me so I will abbreviate it. Some people prefer texts to be written out and not write u for you but I try to make the texts written as short as possible so I shorten things when I can.

Yes. we can learn words with which we are not familiar. Further I was advised by a member not to use sms language while replying. So we have to write with correct full spelling for words.
I learnt and remembered the following words from mylot disucssion--diktat--i am not remembering other words readily.

Yes, I do believe myLot has and always will be an excellent teaching tool to help me improve by thoughtfulness and creativity. I also try to work with sentence flow and just an easy acceleration of my ideas, so that my college writing can hopefully be easier to improve. I'm using myLot to help me with typing and I will then be very prepared for college research papers! I can't wait lol, I sound really nerdy but I'm proud to be a myLot member!

I think my age is the reason why I do not know how to use most of those short cuts.
I have to learn how to understand them when I receive messages with some of those.
My kids know this; so they have to spell out their messages to me properly if they are tired of me asking what do their messages mean...

Well that's good that you have learned to spell again. I never used shortcuts as I couldn't stand them at times. I don't mind people using a few but I don't really use them myself

Babycheetah:
English is the medium of communication in mylot. Sametime we are also told not to comment on the standard of english of members, that helps people write and write and then they slowly improve their ability to communicate well. We also learn a lot of new words or difficult words.

Ravisivan that's right and you know mostly even if peoples English isn't too strong I can still understand what they are trying to express which is good and as they keep posting here they really do learn and improve so every post I'm making is helping in some way to someone else
Riyauro I think that's great that you can now express what you would like to say here and learning too

yes. sometimes we may be committing typographical errors. we may not realise it. we may realise after posting. In such cases I try to make 'amends' while posting replies to others responses. good day.

a pleasant day to you riyauro,
with regard to what you have posted, that is a pretty good thing to know. well, due to the evolution of technology on sending messages via mobile phones, words are being cut and forwarded in a short cut way. as a result, words are being misspelled now a days. and almost all people are doing this. but, i guess, we still should remember how to write the correct spelling.

yeah you are write. Using full correct English in text messages will make the message longer and will take more money when it is little bigger message. It is okay with text messages but we should not forget the real correct spelling. thanks for sharing. have a wonderful day.,

That is nice. Yeah, the technology of some sites and even short messaging through cellphones nowadays diverts correct spelling out of the minds of the young generation. Shortcuts and a different language is being made through them. Good thing that you are getting rid of that habit now. Be sure to always remember the correct spelling and way of communicating.

Mylot is really a good place to learn English. I remembered I once chatted with a man from European country, I wrote the full sentence, right spellings, after a while I got a message from him,"You are so dull." Maybe it's because I don't know how to use "short cuts".
