Saina nehwal won the bronze medal in badminton. Xin Wang, the Chinese opponent was very strong, she is second seeded and she was playing beautifully. When the first set reached game point for Xin Wang , she was facing some problem with knee, yet she managed to won the set with pain. Then in the Second set also she yielded the first point, but she was unable to continue and she retired from the match. So luckily Saina got the bronze.

yes she was lucky.but if the match had continued the result could have gone either way. In first set also she played well, and in second set xin got just one point only so saina could have played and won it also. But she got the bronze without completing the match. really India can now increase the medal tally than last time.

There was always 50-50 chance for both players. Saina fought well in the first set also, but the match could have ended in either way if it had continued. But its good that it ended in Indian favor.

The old adage that comes to my mind is "The harder you work, the luckier you get!!" And Saina has really worked hard at these Olympics. I would not say that she was lucky just that she was fitter than her opponent. Also she put herself in a place, where if anybody faltered, she was very much there to win the match!! Well done Saina!! This is your first taste of Olympic Glory, next time let it be a Golden Glory!! Cheers! Ram

Wow that was a good comment. I think many here have taken my discussion in opposite sense. I didnt meant that saina won the bronze due to pure luck, i just mentioned that she was also having the luck factor. And no doubt that she is hard working and this is the result of that. And as you said this is only start, lets hope that next time she will win the gold itself.

I watched the match critically. Saina was looking so comfortable while Xin Wang was exhausted and tired. saina won medal not by luck otherwise also she was going to win.

If the match had continued it could turned either way. The match was evenly poised. But the luck factons helped saina to get the bronze easily.

Not wanting to spoil anything, I felt that Wang Xin's injury was partially caused by the umpire for that match. There were several ignore calls for the floor to be mopped from Wang Xin's camp and for unknown reasons the umpire just did not allowed it. Eventually, at the closing of the 1st set, Wang Xin was injured when she twisted her knee while trying to retrieve a return from Nehwal. So, you can say that this is one of the controversies of the Games. However, I would not want to take anything away from Nehwal for coming all the way to the 3rd/4th placing match. Other than the premature withdrawal of her opponent, I have to say that she deserves to be playing for the bronze medal match.

Surely she deserves the bronze and she got it. Mostly indian players will not get support of umpires or luck. But here we can feel happy to have it. You may know what half happened in boxing match for divender, there we were cheated and we were unlucky. But here we was lucky. That is all i mentioned

As an indian,i am also feel proud for saina to give us a bronze medal in olympics. She is the second indian woman to get an individual medal in olimpic history. It will be more sweeter if she could get that medal by winning her semifinal match. But still it's a big achievement from her part.Hats off to you saina.

The chinese opposition was very strong. In womens badminton it was all chinese domination, in that situation saina had made up proud by winning the bronze

I too accept that she is lucky. But we should never forget that she is one of the best players in India.I feeel happy that she went till that round. On the other hand you can see sania mirza who lost every match. Now a days she was not concentrating on game. But Saina tried her level best and got that medal.

Saina Nehwal is a great player India has produced. She is the first Indian to reach semifinal of Badminton Olympics I think it itself is an achievement though we had lot of expectations from her.But its OK she won the bronze medal does not matter she got it by luck but she did hard work to reach semis.

saina was a big prospect for India in Olympics. And she reached semifinal also. But loss in semi. And now she got a bronze. She is the first to clinch bronze medal for India in badminton(Olympics). It is good that she got a medal for her sincere and hardworking badminton.

yeah it was a lucky day for Saina. of course she is a brilliant player but it would not have been that an easy affair had the Chinese player had not retired. But at the end of the day, it was Saina who prevailed and we all are very much happy for her for winning the much awaited medal for India.

Hi, Saina Nehwal is a great badminton player. She is very lucky that she got the bronz medal. it is very unlucky match for Xin Wang. Reaching to the semifinal is also a great achievement. No one has reached yet to semi final of badminton before. We indians should feel proud of Saina.

This is an interesting result. I would not have expected someone to have such an injury playing badminton, but perhaps it was sustained elsewhere, or badminton can cause such injuries. However, what I have noticed from badminton over the last few days was what happened a few days ago, mostly with team badminton. Apparently, in the last match of the qualifying games, some teams intentionally lost the match in order to get more favorable position in the knockout round. I was wondering if people thought that this way good strategy or abusing the system?

yes some kind of match setting has happened in badminton doubles, but that settings also happened because one nation have more than one good team. Here also Chian got gold and silver, the only medal they lost in badminton single women's is the bronze. That too in a different condition and situation. But as you said injuries don't happen every time in Badminton, but as any other game this too can happen it, unfortunately the Chinese faced that in the bronze medal match.
