Is there really a purgatory?

I have the entire King James Bible in PDF file format (which is searchable) and I did a search for the word "purgatory" to see where in the Holy Bible it is. The search turned up 0 results. The Holy Bible doesn't make any reference to it. It seems it doesn't really exist. But the Catholic church (of which I am a member of) says that it does exist. Does anybody have any views on this? Why do Catholics believe in purgatory? Where did they get the idea?

I grew up as a Protestant-Methodist and we don't believe in Pulgatory. I agree to Salonga's statement-facts and there are several other Roman Catholic teachings/beliefs that we don't believe in. But we where taught to respect other religion and their beliefs. Religion is non-debatable. We can just say that we believe in this and we don't believe in that, but we must do this with respect. Beliefs and rituals can't save anyone and can't guarantee their place in heaven, it is always only between you and God.

welcome to mylot. I am not a Hindu. I do have christian friends. We talk with a view to learning about each one's religion. A friend of ours use to come with us in auto rickshaw for company sake--she will not come with us inside Srivilliputhur temple--others -hindus --we will go, worship and return and then the friend will accompany us for the hotel. We hindus also believe that we should do good things to others so that we go to heaven after our demise. Mylapore -- chennai -- Kapali temple -- Annual festival takes place--in April-- There will be an exhibition of Hell and heaven exhibited -- I was told by my mother that pictures of people being put into hot oil for their misdeeds etc. will be there in that. She never permitted me to go inside and see. Believe me-- I have not visited that till date --i am 62+. yes. there is heaven and hell.

I don't think that it exist. It is not in the Bible where the description of God and His plans are all written. If there is minor or major penalties on the wrongs we did, I think we have paid the penance already as we live

Well, there are many churches out there teaching different things. If you think about it seriously, then you would realize what is being taught in these churches are mostly based on the perception and understanding of the church people towards the holy bible. That means it may not be the right teaching. Because the way people study and perceives the words of god may be different and affected by personal judgment. Many words taught in churches does not really exist in the bible. So be wise and try to understand what God is really talking about. Or you will be worshipping nothing but the devil as you are not on the right track.

I think when people say there is a purgatory, they just want people to do good things. Because if you do good things, you can go to heaven. People should have a belief, maybe it doesn't exist, but that's oK.

There's no purgatory. If you read Hebrews chapter 9 verse 27 it says, "just as people are destined to die once and after that to face judgement. Only Jesus can save you. There's no other way. Our chance is only here on earth.

I was raise Catholic and went to Catholic school for 8 yrs. (long time ago) I also have done an extensive search on purgatory and limbo. There are no such places, they are not mentioned in the bible because they do not exist. There is heaven and there is hell period. The only way to get into heaven is to ask Christ to forgive you your sins and accept Him as your personal Savior, that is the only way and anyone that tells you otherwise is not speaking the truth. The new testament stresses this in many places. Jesus tells us first in the four gospels, then we are also told by the apostles in the rest of the new testament. You don't have to take my word for it, read it for yourself.
