What possesses a person to walk into a building and kill innocent people???

You hear about it all too often. People walking into a building and shooting anyone in sight. This has happened in schools, fitness centers, even churches. I couldn't ever imagine having the desire or even the thought of doing harm to innocent people. What could you hope to gain by committing such a ruthless act.
