Why do people with money feel superior to those who don't

We had just came back from a covenet circle that we belong to at our Unitarian Universalist church. We are the country bunkens who come to visit. They are all ladies who come from old money. They live in the older part of town and live in fancy but older homes and drive fancy but older cars. They all travel abroad as often as they can. We on the other hand live in a modern house and drive a newer car but go to Las Vegas for vacation rather than Europe. Today's topic was do you treat people who do things for you differently than you do family or friends. They all responded in one way or another as yes. They feel superior to their maid. They feel superior to the waitress. It just totally blew me away. We never really gave it much thought. We treat everyone the same. We even leave at least $10.00 for the maid at the hotels that we stay at. Sometimes we even leave them more and thank them. Is this just how the weathly are? Or do you think it depends on perhaps how we are raised. Do you think people change if they go from a middle class background to a wealthy one there attitudes towards people will change. I just don't understand how anyone can think they're better than anyone else.

Some rich people feel superior because they KNOW they can do anything... or almost anything to people who are significantly poorer. Some of them even believe they were born rich for a reason or that poor people deserve to be poor, because they haven't do anything to be rich (and the sad thing, even those spoiled teen brats tend to think this way who didn't do anything for them to become rich just to have been born to rich parents), and so they have the right to look down on them... and they like acting as the world revolved around them and everyone should be their servants...
but fortunately not all rich people are like this, only the stupid ones.

This might explain why Barbara Bush made the statement when she was at the New Orleans Stadium soon after the Hurricane Katrina hit she stated the refugees were underprivileged anyway see quote here http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/barbara2.asp. Talk about arrogance and she stated this on national TV. Thank goodness not everyone that are wealthy believe they are better than anyone else.

Unfortunately it appears u were brought up right. You treat people the way you would like to be treated yourself. That housekeeper rarely gets to take her children trick or treating because she's busy cleaning the office building those women's husbands work at. More than likely she also holds a part time job someplace else.
What I'm getting at is that working class people tend to understand each other while the rich make donations to make it appear as though they do. They give a "generous" bonus to the maid they spend all year treating like dirt or worse invisible. Is that apart of the old money culture? I would probably say yes. They are used to having money and servants and people responding a certain way when their name is uttered in a noisy room.
Those women are actually worse than the people they look down at because they know they do it and believe its their God given right to treat those in lower income houses like something under their never been worn Pradas.

You are right. It's funny because all of them had positions within the church. One was a vice president and they have connections. We were there mainly to give them another perspective and to perhaps shed some light on their wrong way of thinking. I do believe we did and we had a very heated and understanding discussion. The rich who are from old money wouldn't be carrying a parada they'd be carrying an old leather purse though. They're more frugal then the folks with new money who buy the new houses and drive the new cars and live above their means.
