I turn 36 in September and at the moment I trying to decide how I am going to celebrate my birthday this year. I would love to invite some of my family members and a few friends for dinner at my favourite Indian restaurant, but it is not a realistic option, because we simply can't afford it, so I am trying to find another solution. Last year I had a small party in our home and my husband and I had cooked food from Iran because we wanted to try something different. If we decide to cook dinner again we are probably going to find a recipe from another country like we did last year, but I have also thought about serving coffee and cakes instead of dinner. If I choose that option I am going to bake or buy the traditional Danish birthday cakes called brunsviger and lagkage. Do you celebrate your birthday? Do you have any birthday traditions like a special kind of food that you always serve for your visitors? Or does it change from year to year?

I celebrate my birthday and try to find different things to do each year and different food. Last year I took my friends out in a field by the sea. Some of us even took the first swim of summer of 2011(my birthday is in May). This year I had some friend over at my appartment. Simple stuff, simple food. Next year I am thinking of something like a treasure hunt. Still thinking about it, it's too early. I wish you Happy birthday now, I might be away in September.

Cool! Fun with chopsticks. Great. Good to know we both have strange ideas for celebrations.

Happy belated birthday to your mother I am very happy to hear that you got your your passport, because I know from your discussions that you really want to travel. Do you know which country you want to visit? I am trying to plan my birthday at the moment. Today I went to the restaurant where I wanted to buy take-away, but the restaurant no longer exist. Fortunately I still have some time to think of another place or maybe we are going to cook our own food instead of combining take-away and other own food like I had thought about.

Your mother's chocolate cake sounds delicious My mother has sometimes made a cake for me as well but not every year. I still haven't made a final decision about my plans for this year, but my birthday is a Friday and I have to work the night between Friday and Saturday so I am not sure if I am going to invite people over my actual birthday, but I still have some time to think about that. We are going to trip soon and I don't have much money to spend a party so it will just be a small celebration.

Why not order some food from the Indian restaurant and have it at your home? You could choose a few of your favorite dishes and then fill out the rest meal by making some salad and maybe cooking a lentil dish or two. My birthday celebrations tend to involve going out with a friend or, now, my boyfriend to a restaurant. My most recent birthday, my boyfriend and I went to a somewhat upscale restaurant that offers absolutely fantastic American cuisine. The birthday before, we went to a nice Indian place.

That is good idea I think that I could order some dishes from the Indian restaurant and add some of my own things. That would solve the problem with the ingredients because I am not able to buy the ingredients for the Indian dishes on my own island, and that makes it a bit complicated to cook all of the food by myself. Your birthday celebrations sound very nice. In the past I also went out for dinner on my birthday, but this year I have the save the money because I need it for our trip.

Hi Porcospino And I turn 38 this September I love your idea of serving food prepared at home but from a different country. I too do that sometimes when I am celebrating my wife's birthday (August) or our wedding anniversary(Feb). But there is a little issue with this at my place - most of the ingredients are unavailable or priced high here. So it is not those grand eating dishes most of the time. For celebrating my birthday, ummm.... no. I dont celebrate it now as you know I am ill and my relaxations from medical diets are limited and I do prefer to use them on other occasions - like the special days mentioned above or when we travel (okay we travel for medical checkups mostly but then as we are in a different city we find it difficult to get the medical prescription diet for me). So at best, what we do for my celebration is a Movie on the computer with wife-prepared dessert - Ice Cream with some fruits. As for visitors, well, only my parents and brother and his family.

I have the same problem when I want to cook food from another country. It is impossible to find the ingredients on my island, so we have to visit a shop on the neighbour island if we want to buy the ingredients. It is little expensive to go there and it takes time as well, but if we want to cook international food, we have to buy the ingredients there. I think that it sounds like a very nice idea to cook food from another country on your wife's birthday or your anniversary Last year we cooked food from Iran, but I am not sure what country we are going to choose this year. I am probably going to find a recipe online. I understand that you want to use your relaxations from the medical diet on other days. My husband is on a medical diet and he breaks it someones on special occasions, but not too often because he suffers from the consequences when he breaks it. The movie/icecream night sounds very nice. I get hungry when I hear about the icecream

Hi porcospino! I hope you have a great day! During my birthday, my family and I will just go out for a dinner. I don't have any special celebration for my previous birthdays. But I am planning to have it during my 50th birthday. So I still have a lot of time to prepare.

Thanks Going out for dinner on your birthday sounds like a nice tradition. I sometimes do the same thing. My husband turns 50 in a couple of years and we are also going to have a celebration on that day, but we haven't decided how we are going to celebrate the day. Fortunately we still have some time to think about that.

It's a good thing you're not eating out but cooking a birthday dinner from other countries because it's best to shake things up a little bit. Speaking of which, such a coincidence that my birthday is TWO DAYS AGO (08/08/1985), but I don't have any specific type of tradition or having any visitors at all. However, I did travel last weekend to Charlotte, NC for my pre-birthday trip. It was enjoyable. Went on a shopping spree to 3, count 'em, THREE malls and ate a few things, but they all tasted good. Slept over at a hotel, got free internet access, went to downtown, or in this case, “uptown” Charlotte, and got a birthday gift for a family member’s husband plus some items for myself. Got to a third mall in my state and when I got back home, I was sore and near broke, but satisfied. This year in 2012, since there’s not a whole lot of people where I live, I decided to skip the song and went straight to blowing out the candles, and I decided to wait until later this week to get the gifts. Oh, and I almost forgot, it was the first time that there was a power outage in a hotel where me and an older sister slept at. It was a bad thunderstorm and as I was finished setting up my computer, the power was knocked out! I thought it was because I had plugged in one too many cords, but later on I heard that the lightning or another car knocked out the power instead. So yeah, this year my birthday was a bit different from the rest.

Thank you Yes, I think that I will choose a small party in my home, the food at the Indian restaurant is really delicious, but it would be too expensive. My husband and I will cook some food and/or bake some cakes (the traditional Danish birthday cakes) I hope that my friends from the other of the country will be able to attend the party, that would make me very happy.
