Meet My New Fear - Rain!

I live in Davao, a part of the Philippines which cannot be affected by any typhoon because we are surrounded with mountains. Tsunami is also not possible because we also have Samal Island to cover us before the open sea.
When I saw the news regarding the flood in Luzon, it made me worry that it is possible to happen here in Davao. It is only a monsoon rain and not a typhoon, yet it affected the whole Luzon. I also considered that somewhere Davao have also experienced flash flood.
It rained hard last night, like you can feel the skies are ranging with anger because it came with loud thunder and flashes of lightning. We were already in bed. My 2 babies are already asleep, and my husband as well. I suddenly heard raindrops in our ceiling. It started with just a soft sound until it covered the whole atmosphere that you cannot even hear the television. I started to get paranoid... My imaginations have gone wild! Our subdivision is a bit slopey, and our house is located downside. we are in the middle of two inclined roads. I was thinking that it will be possible that the rainwater will run down to our area and create a flood! I always look out the window to check and really saw water rising up, but it's just until above the ankle I think. I forced myself to relax so I can already sleep. But I really can't. I even thought of preparing needed things in a bag in case we need to evacuate. And I was also planning how to carry my kids. But I was glad the rain went slower after 10-15 minutes. It was only that few minutes, but I felt it was already hours! By that time, I felt a relief. I looked out the window again and I saw the water is also going down and I already can see the cement road. It's good our drainage system is big enough to cover large amount of water. It is only then that I went to sleep.
It will really create a trauma even if I am not an actual victim. But I keep on praying that God will spare us from this calamity. And that the people in Luzon will be safe, and that the rain will go away and the flood to subside...

Yeah with that kind of amount of rain it is really frightful to experience that one. For a couple of days rain seems unstoppable and quite and calm rivers started to become violent that it inundated to higher levels making most of the residents there flooded.

How frightening that must be for you and I hope the situation improves very soon.
We do suffer from flooding in this country (England) and the place I live now has had its flood defences improved after major flooding in 2005. I wasn't living here then but this house was spared due to a hill on another street nearby, so I can well understand what you're saying. The flooding is nothing like some other countries like yours though.
The last major storm was a few months ago and the wind and rain lashed the side of our chimney and took out the lead flashing as it's called around the bottom of it. It has been waterproofed but not fully repaired, something that is annoying me as it will soon be winter and the roofer will be even more reluctant to come out and finish the job off.

I hope now the climate is calm and quite. Many people suffered a lot and overcome with fearful experiences.
Best of luck.

Watching the television makes me feel so sad knowing that our countrymen are suffering that terrible flood. Tough we now have to accept that it is already part of our lives. That these floods goes along with the development and modernization of ones country. And these flash floods happen everywhere because more people don't even care with how our mother nature has suffered and it just gives back what we did to her. So I guess what we can do now is help in our very little way by start with self-discipline of not throwing our garbage everywhere. And pray for the victims and pray that it will not happen here in our city.

you are right. the cause of what is happening now are still the people's doing. The earth is already polluted, and people are not disciplined enough to properly throw garbages that's why drainage systems are clogged and cannot hold water anymore, thus, turns into floods. I hope people now will really learn the lesson.

I also fear when the rain is pouring very hard. I had a very bad experience with Ondoy in 2009 when I was stranded at NLEX from 1:00 Pm to 1:00 AM the next day. Then just this week, the monsoon rain is hitting Luzon very hard. I saw a river going to our plant almost overflowing. That river overflowed during Ondoy. I feared that that would happen again. But thank God, the sun is shining now and the rain stopped already.

It is pretty understandable; and not just for you but I guess for most of us. Now, when it starts to rain a bit harder than the usual drizzle, flashes of the newsflash about the floods and the victims cannot be avoided to run in my mind. No matter how prepared we are or planning we do, sometimes mother nature's course cannot be totally anticipated. We could have prevented casualties but not the actual path of nature.
