Adding a banner to a wordpress site (and yes I read the instructions)

I am having a terrible time trying to add a banner to my wordpress site. I copied the banner and i understand the link but.... How do I get the photo (image of the banner) into the widget of my wordpress blog? There is a widget for "text" but then the photo ie image does not copy into the widget? I want to add the banner to a widget in the sidebar not have to "insert" each and every time to a post? Is there a way to do this? Most ads I just copy a code and insert into widget and it works great but this copy a photo and then add hyper link is not workiing for me? Sugggestions- what am I doing wrong? Thank you much
