A relative of mine has a bad front teeth. When he went to the dentist, he was given 2 options to save his teeth. The first option is to do root canal on the dab tooth and put a crown on it. This is less expensive. However, the dentist could not say whether it will last. He was told that he still might loose the tooth if root canal is done on it. The second option is to extract the bad tooth and do an implant. This is a longer process (about a half year to one year) and would be more costly. My relative is asking for advise. I told him to go for the root canal and if you loose the tooth, then the implant is next. If say money is not a problem, would you go for just a root canal or an implant?

I would choose to have a root canal then a crown. Root canal treatment has a high success rate although there are just uncontrolled matters that can lessen its success rate but still the chance of keeping the natural tooth for years is high. An implant is still an artificial tooth. A natural tooth is worth more than an implant so it is still best to save the tooth while it can still be saved.

I guess he has to make a decision either way. From my own experience teeth with root canals also can go bad, Mine did and it cost me a fair bit to have an implant done after. I also had four other implants which fell out after about 5 yearsi. The bones could not hold them. My cousin also had implants that did not hold. On the other hand many people swear by them. I guess it depends on your bone structure and the skills of the dentist who does the work. I would ask about his qualifications to do implants before I would make a decision.
