Gross, right? Well that's dogs for you. I can't imagine why but I have two dogs and the big one gets his tootsie roll out of the litter box and if he drops it on the rug, the little dog and him fight over it. It really disgusts me and I hate the litter on the rug, in his fur, etc. I have a covered litter box and I put a chair in front of the opening and still!!! Any ideas?? Hope I haven't grossed ya all out too much?!

We have never had a dog that ate poo, but I know other people that have had this problem. From what I understand, there can be several reasons for this including improper diet, not getting enough to eat, parasitic infections, and vitamin deficiency. They eat the poo to get the nutrients out of it that they (or the animal that left the feces) was not able to absorb.
The easiest thing to start with is a change in diet. If you are buying the ultra-cheap dog food, then try changing to one that is a little bit more expensive and addresses the health and nutritional needs of your dogs. I know that Iams is a good brand, but there are others out there if you do some research. If this does not help the situation, then I would check with your vet and see what he or she suggests, especially since the vet might want to do some tests to make sure that your dogs do not have worms or other health issues that they can pass not only to each other but also to your cats.

That is interesting. If the vet does not seem to think there is a problem, then it sounds like they have just gotten into a bad habit, which can also happen. Unfortunately, I am not entirely sure how to break them of this habit. I have heard of people putting something in the dog's food to make the poo taste awful ... like poo doesn't already taste awful ... to keep them from eating their own poo, so I wonder whether or not there is something similar you could put in the cat's food that would have the same effect. I suspect that the vet would know what is put in the dog's food to keep them from eating their own poo and whether or not it is safe for cats or perhaps if there is something specifically made for cats that you could try.

so far luckily they don't eat their own. I don't know how much more I could spend on food and eat too!! The vet says the food is great? These animals go to the doctors more than I do and they guilt me into every test and vaccine so I guess we could just try another expensive brand?? In some ways I think this is all just a sport for them, see who gets to it first.

Who knows, it's a question that has plagued us for as long as we had him. I heard about stuff in their food to make them stop eating their own too. I guess I could ask the vet but I'd hate to make her food taste yucky just cuz some idiot dog won't stay out of her litterbox. I could just sit there all day wait til she does it and them put something on it?? Hope you're having a great day Purple!

Hello Christine. We have two cocker spanials that used to get into the cat litter too. They would do as you said your og does. I just put a block in front of the opening for the cats so the dogs can't get to the litter. We keep the litter box next to the dryer. I have it at an angle to the dryer and the wall. The opening is set up so that it is a t an angle making a triangle between the wall and the dryer. Then the new or fresh big litter container is set next to the dryer so the dogs can' get through but the cats can get up and over the litter container. The strange things doges will eat. One of the spaniels would eat the girls pony tail holders then puke them up. now that is gross.

My theory is the dog loves the girls and eating their hair holders is the next best thing? That's what I told my husband when the dog chewed up his second pair of glasses!

Wow, it's the simple answers that floor me. Yeah, that would work, I feel so dumb. Now I'll just look for a logical place for it. Thanks!
Well I'm not sure if puking them up is better than it coming out the other end. My hubby's had to (hold on) pull it out the other end cuz of stupid stuff he ate. I'm so sorry that was gross, but dogs are.

I had a dog many years ago and I had two cats then too and the same problem As we lived in a place with its own garden then my dog also loved taking the best ones outside and burying them.. for later maybe?

Oh yeah it was for later, dogs aren't neat that's for sure but that's funny. The dog had to go hide it for his very own. They are funny, well and gross.

Oh it's common, really common and the stupid dogs will eat their own. It's the one thing about dogs that I have to turn the other way and pretend it's just not happening.

Hmmm, well I thought it was just something that others joked about and they didn't actually do I guess but perhaps there is something medically wrong for them to do this. I only had one cat cover the other cats poo in the litter box once, I guess he thought he didn't do a good job of it. LOL

To dogs cat poop is like choclate to us. I can't remember the exact name of the product but there is a supplement you can give to the cat to make the poop undesirable to the dog. If you go to your local pet store Im sure they can help you.

That's interesting. I knew they made stuff for the dog to eat so he/she wouldn't eat their own, but for the cat - gotta check into that. Thanks!
