How Health Conscious are you?

Three months back, I have decided that enough is enough. I do not always want to be a couch potato and always end up in bed during weekends. I said to myself, I want to be productive to be able to something with my time and also be able to maintain my physique.
A friend recommended going to the gym and I can say that this has been a great change in my life!
I feel that I am more active and have more stamina compared to what I am previously. I wonder, how health conscious are you? Do you just watch what you eat or do you do some physical exercises as well?

I started using a gazelle about 4 weeks ago. I started very slow, only 5 minutes, before I got out of breath. Yes, I am TOTALLY out of shape, unless you consider "round" a shape. I am up to 16/17 minutes a day, 4 times a week. The other days I do housework that makes me break out in a sweat. It feels so great! I'd forgotten what a high you can get from working out! I have lost inches in my waist, thighs, and arms, and it motivates me to contintue to work on endurance and build up the cardio work. I was at the doctor yesterday and my cholesterol/trygicerides have really improved. I have a goal to be able to work out/walk 30 minutes a day 5 days a week. The workouts have also motivated me to work on my eating habits. I am learning more about portion control, started keeping a food journal, and watching out for "empty" calories, like sodas, processed foods, etc. It's not easy by any stretch of the imagination, but the positive feelings and feeling so good about what I'm doing is what keeps me going. I know it will take time to lose the weight, but since I didn't put it on overnight, that's ok. It WILL come off! Good luck with your own goals and keep up the great work!

Kudos to us who is trying our very best to stay fit / healthy!
I also try doing my gym exercises alternately because I make time for my husband too! It's a good thing for me that he is also conscious with his body (to be honest, he has ever been since we met but I just could not drag my butt out of the bed, literally) and it is fortunate that when I started doing this, he has been supportive of it.
He has been on me for the first few days when I was kind of halfhearted about going to the gym (yeah, this was because I was getting sick every time I go - see how the body rejects exercise!).
Do you have a weight goal that you want to reach? As for me, I don't. It really is more of to be healthy... enough to have a baby (fingers crossed).

welcome to mylot. You have stated that you are using "gazelle'. What is it? Is that an exercise instrument?
Your point that you do a lot of work at home is good. if one runs about here and there and does more work his health will be well maintained. When I play with my grand son my health improves. This is better instead of sitting in one place and typing or watching tv. good day.

I'm sorry I took so long to respond...away from my computer! The gazelle is a no-impact exercise "walking" machine. I get on and walk on average 15/18 minutes a day, 4 or 5 times a week. I also play with our 4 dogs (we live on 1/2 acre) outside and try to keep up with housework every day. I keep weekends free for my husband and I to do yardwork, garden, and have friends over for cookouts. Our friends are moderately health conscious as well, especially now that we are all facing middle age bravely! My gazelle has become a good friend too! I look forward to walking every morning, it is my own private time. And yes, playing with your grandson will definitely keep your heart rate going, won't it? You have a great day too!

I have several lapses when it comes to eating healthy foods but I try my very best to avoid food which are processed. I don't really go to a gym for exercise, instead I do it whenever I feel like it here at the comforts of my room. Sometimes I do the hip-hop dance or just plain exercises which I watch on a dvd.

You have not mentioned your age in the profile. It is right to be tempted to taste different foods when you are below 50. Even though I am 60+ I cannot resist the temptation of tasting sweets and fruits when I go for buffet lunch. One must watch that the weight is not increasing abnormally. also do exercises whenever possible.

it is difficult to maintain eating healthy food. I do have several lapses too. I guess your mind also have to be psyched with all of this.
I did try doing home exercise by watching videos. I was encouraged at first but since I did not have a buddy who is willing to do this with me, I stopped which is why I decided to join the gym because you also get to encourage one another to carry on.
However, I am not the type who goes to the gym religiously because I also have "days" where I really am too tired to go to the gym.
Of course, to each his own so I hope you keep on doing the home exercise! :)

I do have that same feeling! :p however, my husband do remind me of the membership fee that I pay and that surely motivates me to go and sweat myself out! hahahaha!

Being health conscious helps. It helps one to avoid food that may not suit one's health. On my part for the last few years I take considerably less sweets and ice cream because it may not suit my health. Otherwise I do take precaution to prevenut asthma attacks by inhaling the prescribed medication. I also take the medicines prescribed regularly.
If one is fat going to gym will help and keep blood circulation active and the person can also try to reduce the weight.

Hi ravisivan,
I do try to avoid eating the same food that you have mentioned. I always try to eat at least once a week or twice just to give in to my urge. My husband also has asthma and according to him, the best medication that he has done is to go to the gym and also to be close to the beach.
The salty air helps him from having the attacks. We have been here in Dubai for sometime and to be honest, he has not had these attacks for the longest time but when we go back to our country, he has the attacks.
I do have to disagree about the fact that you have pointed out. Anyone who wants to start a healthy lifestyle can start going to the gym for a start and then he/she can pick up pointers and use this as a starting point to maintain the lifestyle.
