I think it is better if you'd ask her in a nice and polite way. Bring her to a mall and ask her if she needs anything. Or maybe she needs money to pay for something or to give to someone. So I guess that it is better if you would ask her. The only risk I see if you do that is she may need something that is beyond your budget. But I think it is still better since you will know if she has problems. Some mothers are hesitant to tell their children about their problems. If she said that she doesn't need anything, maybe that is the time that you wrap something for her or treat her somewhere nice. Baby sitting is a tough job. I guess she deserves something to show that you appreciate her effort. Does not really has to be money.

You can give both, parents enjoy receiving cash because they can choose anything they want, and any gift of token even if it is not pricey they appreciate it much and they will feel loved

For me better to give her money and gift for sure she will become happy. My mother lives wth us too before and took care everything here in the house, most of the time during pay day we gave her money so that she can buy everything she want without asking money for us and also we buy some clothes and shoes for her. It really nice to show gratitute and appreciation to our mother especially if they taking of us or our kids.
