Why do kids hide things from their parents?

Well, maybe they keep secrets from their parents as a form of resentment, that their parents do not care anyway. Perhaps they do this to avoid punishment or to escape shame and embarrassment. Some teenagers hide things from their parents because they simply lack attachment or connection with them.

Hi,
It is normal for kids to keep some secrets from their parents. I agree with all the reasons you have mentioned for this kind of action on the part of the kids. Sometimes, of course, it is better to tell one's parents rather than getting into trouble by confiding in others.
From my childhood, I have been a little shy and afraid of my parents. I always felt they are strict and would not like to talk frankly about certain things. On the other hand, many of my friends told me that their parents are like their friends, and that they can talk about everything with them. Since I have always felt respect for them and was also scared to talk frankly, I have not said many things to my parents. This includes everything that a person learns in the process of growing up. I could never ask them any question or discuss with them about anything I was curious about. I would discuss with friends instead.
Now that I am older, I am relieved that I can be somewhat frank with my mother but still some sort of an invisible barrier exists so that I cannot discuss just about anything.
