back to school alternatives - homeschooling suggestions

Many parents are getting kids ready for going back to school right now. A friend of mine with a 7 year old daughter is not because she just started homeschooling her. This is also something I would like to do with my own kids if I ever have any. I would like to help her if possible, and have already handed down to her old books I got free from the library and suggested they watch some Alton Brown cooking shows for the home ec and chemistry kmowledge. Does anyone, especially those who already homeschool, have amy unique suggestions of lesson plans amd outings?
