Local weather staff and observers protesting...

Philippines

Oh noes, it seemed that they finally snapped. according to media reports, their benefits and compensation had been thrown out of their arms. i don't know the reason why though but this made them rebelled after one of their SENIOR weather observer had die due to STROKE. their lack of medical and other benefits had forced them to express their anger. if actions are not meant, FUTURE WEATHER FORECAST WILL BE A LOT MORE INACCURATE.they still haven't received their funds which is supposed to be this month. Our own Weather forecast is in STRIKE or should we say LUNCH strike..but they are not boycotting their work.

After reading the news on the weather forecasters, I suddenly remembered how the president has insulted a junior weather forecaster for not being able to provide accurate weather forecasts during an NDRMMC meeting regarding the habagat. How I pitied the poor guy who was almost stammering from the words of the president. I sympathized with the guy not knowing that these people are pitiful for not receiving their benefits and compensation. While it is true that there were several errors in weather forecasts but they have the right to their benefits. They are considered the most important persona during typhoons and the government should be able to provide what is their due. These people are heroes.

I think the President has no right to insult anyone. I think this attitude shows that he's not mature enough to be the President in the first place. I know this is off-topic, but whenever I hear him doing these things in public, it just makes me wonder what he's capable of. He insults people yet he cannot finish the "issues" that he needs to attend to. What happened to the Ampatuan case? Why isn't he focusing on that? Whew! It's difficult to predict the weather, it's even more difficult to do so if the facilities are not given priority. The president needs to look unto himself first before he has the right to insult anyone - most especially in public!

Well, at least, we got to see his attitude in this kind of situation. You’ll never know what kind of boss he is to his underlings.

I agree with Laydee. The president has no right to insult anyone. And these Pag-ASA people need to be paid what's their due. Weather forecasting can never be accurate, and with inferior and outdated gadgets the Pag-Asa is using, plus the low morale within the ranks because of low pay and unpaid benefits, we can never ever expect a true picture of what's happening. The president should stop insulting these people and likewise, stop defending his buddies. (oops, Out of topic)

It really is sad that these people are paid very low salary. They are doing public service, and considering that our country is in the tropical area and prone to weather disturbances, it is expected that these people will have a lot of work to do day in and day out. They should be compensated fairly. I hope the government does something about that, just like they did for teachers.

Hello Jureathome, unfortunately the given compensation to them would only last for this year and there won't be for next year. sad to know that they were lacked medical benefits and only be given some monetary compensation. i wonder how the president can fix something like that? have a ncie day

Oh no, that's worse. They should have medical benefits just like other gov't employees. How could that be? Perhaps, the dept head of Pagasa is not in good terms with the president, huh.

That's why it's called forecasting Mr. President. It's not really 100% accurate and there's a chance that it will not go as predicted. The way I see it, these weather employees are doing their job. Maybe if the President focus more on long term solutions rather than band-aid ones natural calamities won't hurt us as much as it's doing now.

Hello xtedaxcvg, I don't know if he's criticizing is right but unfortunately he clearly didn't understand the right kind of work these people do. well, band aid solutions is the only thing that he has now and that's it for sometime in his administration. there are actually a lot of pumping stations that are messed up and that made the flood huge

It is sad that the people that informs us of our weather condition are not paid well. I think Government should look into this so the moral of the people there would at least be lightened up.

Hello rsa101, this is part of our science department in terms of meteorology and yet they are too underpaid and not well funded. more people are going to give up or they will protest more just like the other government agencies. i doubt there will be more accurate forecasting after this, it shows another form of deterioration.

I think the president personally visited these protesting employees and assured them that they will receive all the benefits retroactively. Good thing he took the initiatives to talk with them personally as it brings down the tension brewing in these bureau.

Are you referring to PAG-ASA Weather Forecasters? Aren't they under the government? Anyhow, I haven't really read nor heard the story, perhaps it's because my days have been busy enough. But it's sad that people like them who have a great impact for the safety of other people (or the nation in general) are not given proper attention and benefits. Have a great Mylot experience ahead!

Hello laydee, Yes I was referring to the poor staff who has now done a lunch strike. another sad thing is that due to corruption, the government doesn't have that much funds to give it to them. i don't know how much are they paid but corruption has led people to believe that they will never have enough of these funds

Yup, they are the poor people who protested mid-way through a storm

I guess I’m not blaming anyone of them who tries to get better work and pay abroad. I know that these people take a lot of complaints from the president to anyone who is inconvenienced by the flood. Having enough pay and compensation should have made them very equipped in dealing with these people. How could an employee work under such stress? I somewhat feel sorry for the agency and its workers. They work so hard for a pittance of a salary and no grief from the public. They should have been priority since they are often the authority when it comes to weather, which is already a crucial part of our life. Passion for work is one thing, surviving on a meager salary is another.

Hello Jeanneyvonne, they had to they have no choice out here and i hate the fact that they have to work like that and then have little salary of it. working on that field is not easy to boot and what the president said was a bit insecure and not sensitive to the workers. you're right passion is differ also from survival

There is a thoughtless comment in one of the news websites that the workers should have gone aboard (if they feel that their wages aren’t sufficient). If that happened, what’s gonna happen to our weather agency? We can’t always subscribe to international news! TSk, tsk, tsk.

sad that they are going through this. They are important people who should be benefited well, should be compensated well..who would work when you are not compensated? this should be dealt upon by the government.

Hello Jazel, yes the staff and that department is very important to the country because it can save lives from more unpredictable storms or strong winds. i don't know how they will they do it but one time beneficial offer is never enough, i doubt there won't be another protest on this one.

This is serious I wonder why they only have the guts to express their sentiments- after all those years-a decade or so?

Government should better take very good care of these people especially the more experienced ones, so many lives are dependent on them, before they ever think of leaving the country. This is one instance where they really have a right to demand from our government especially now that "habagat" and the typhoons have taken their toll on them, they are different from those who just protest and protest without helping or contributing anything to our country

Hello louievill, i think those are one of the few experience ones left. i know we have more meteorologist out there but they changed course and study course that would only led them to work abroad. well, they have the right to protest knowing that they have not complained for a very long time.
