I don't think the Facebook mail could compete with gmail in 3 years. I guess most Facebook users will get a mail account there just for the sake of it, but since most people have already been using gmail or yahoo mail for their email purpose, it is unlikely that they will want to change as it is troublesome to inform their contacts.

But don't you think that Facebook has shown its importance to the world now? These days so many companies track their employees Facebook profile to keep a track on what they are saying about their superiors & the company. In some of the companies in US its mandatory to mention their Facebook ID in their CV's. If Facebook has generated this much of generosity in public, then don't you think that it has potential of beating email industry?

I must be very outdated, I don't even know there is a Facebook mail. I don't know Facebook has launched this new service. Even though, I don't think it can beat Gmail because I personally think Gmail is much more popular. And it has been available for years and therefore they have a lot of customers. If there is no new interesting feature in Facebook mail, I don't consider to have it.

I don't think so, and if it does, it will take a really long time probably. I think a lot of people are happy with Gmail and most people don't change email providers that often, since it creates a lot of extra work. So I think that is the main reason.
But I must admit that I haven't tried Facebook mail myself yet.

You can use it. Just give it a try. It has not so many facilities like gmail but it will improve. You are absolutely right that it will take time to come in action. cross your finger to get 1 single platform for chatting & mailing.

I don't think so. The concept between Gmail and Facebook Mail are far different.
With Gmail, you'll get much amazing services that fulfill all of your mailing needs. And as for Facebook, well, it is meant to be a social network, anyway. So, the feature of their mailing service isn't that impressive.

I think that Facebook can't beet gmail. Because most of the officials, even though they have facebook account send mails through gmail, in order to show their own standard as gmail being one of the best Email brand.
Moreover a social networking site may not have that much deal with the email site..
