Ready to give up!

So, the beginning of the year, I was considered about 50lbs overweight based on weight alone. HOWEVER, my breast size has increased considerably with kids & at 1 point in my life I lost 20 lbs & nothing was in the boobs (I gained 10 of the 20 back)... I dieted (cut back junk and count calories daily and am ALWAYS under calories!) and go to the gym 3 days a week. I've added walking the bike trail for at least 1.5 hours at least twice a week, too... bringing me up to 5 days of exercise... I'm gaining weight. I don't understand why! From the beginning of the year, I got myself down to almost a 13 lb loss and now I'm at a 5 lb loss. I don't understand why I'm working harder & instead of losing weight, I'm gaining! I'm thinking about going to the dr to have things tested. I know that a thyroid issue can cause weight gain, what else should I have blood tested?!?!?!? I want to get it all tested at the same time. I don't know what else could be causing the gain. I'm so frustrated! I even do measurements just because I realize that muscle weighs more than fat but there's no decrease in measurements... in fact, there's been increases. I just don't get it!

I think I'm inclined to agree with you. You need to go to the doctor. Show him on your phone app what you've been eating and how you've been exercising.
I'm 54 and never had a real weight issue until I got older. I'm over-weight because I learned food tastes good and it really helped when I was feeling low. Basically I'm fat because I eat too much of the wrong things. Refined is bad for us.
I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. My feet hurt and I'm developing knee issues, also when I eat crap, I feel like crap. Certain foods can make you feel good while it's going down and the next day heap havoc on your emotions and nervous system.
I don't want to diet or count calories. I just want to eat like I have some sense. I lost 13 pounds in three weeks and am never really craving anything. I haven't started exercising yet but I will. As soon as I get under 200 pounds I'm going to start. That is three pounds away.
I started with changing my choices. I pretty much deal with one meal at a time. My motto is “If God made it, I can eat it without guilt”
King James Version (KJV)
Genesis 1:29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
I have a 30 minute drive to work so I leave early enough to go by Kroger's and walk through the produce section. I see what strikes my fancy and that's what I get. One day they had corn still in the shuck, I bought one. I also got one sweet potato a cucumber and a nectarine. I had already picked up some low fat salad dressing and we had butter and salt and pepper at work. We also have a micro-wave.
I don't know what I want until I get there and I see what looks good. One day I bought a bag of cherries, another black grapes. I keep single servings of Campbell soup on hand in my locker. Sometimes I'll pick up three pieces of fruit. One for the morning meeting, one for lunch and one for the way home to take the edge of hunger off. I love sweets so I eat a lot of fruit.
I like to eat in bed. I bought almonds and pecans. I grab a hand-full when I lay down to read and just munch away.
I know me, I've tried dieting and other things and those things don't work for me. I'm not a self-disciplined type of person. I'm not going to give up sweets, I'm not going to stop snacking in bed and I won't count calories. I don't want to change every aspect of my life.
It's been easier to just change the food. I don't want to be on a schedule.
I don't want to eat three meals a day with a few snacks and nothing after a certain time at night. I don't want this to be an issue.
It's working for me. So far anyway. I have learned a few things. I also go out and eat two or three times every two weeks. I was eating out everyday when I worked. I'm saving a lot more money by stopping by the grocery store. I can eat for three or four dollars a day where I was spending up to ten if you go somewhere and need to tip.
With Gods food I can get full and stay satisfied and there is NO GUILT. One night I decided I'd have a brown sugar pop tart. On my way to work the next morning I noticed my desire for a ham and cheese BISCUIT or a Cinnamon roll really grinding on me. I believe it was the refined sugar and flour in that pop tart.
I will eat these things but I am very careful. I know there will be consequences, I don't mean weight-gain. The consequences will be the chain reaction of cravings I'll have to deal with.
I hope you go to the doctor and he's able to help you understand why you haven't lost anything. I hope it isn't anything serious.
I'll be watching your posts because I'm very interested in how this plays out for you.
Also, I don't weigh on a regular basis. I only weigh when I feel emotionally able to accept what the scales say.

Hi Susan! I've yet to make an appt with my dr yet. I figure I'll give it a year of really trying to lose the weight (that was this year & I just joined the gym in March & recently added in the extra walking about a month or so ago) & see if it's a realistic loss or not. (It could just be my instant-gratification personality & I'm doing relatively good *minus the fact that I hit a plateau & gained - but that always ends up happening, right?*)
I know there's things in my diet I could still give up, but I'm just not willing to. I feel like I should be allowed to eat anything I want as long as it's in moderation. Keeping track of the calories is helping me keep things in moderation, too! I always log before I actually eat it to see if the amount I am about to serve myself is what I REALLY want or if a smaller amount is good... I know I'm eating less than I did this time last year because I'm feeling fuller faster & staying fuller longer... but, the scale is still gaining...

I have been losing weight for the past couple of years so I feel as though I can give you advice. If you're not able to lose weight then the truth of the matter is that you are either not doing enough exercise or you're counting your calories wrong. Even if you did have a thyroid problem, you would not gain weight if you were eating fewer calories than you were burning, because it just doesn't work like that. If you don't like how much you're able to eat, then you should do lots more exercise so that you can perhaps have an extra snack in the day. I find that it's good to go on an hour long bike ride in an afternoon, because I can then eat a little bit more that night without having to worry that I am going to be gaining weight.

I am certain that I am counting calories correct *it's an app on my iPhone that I compare their numbers with the numbers on the side of the package* and, I'm pretty sure 8-9 hours of exercise between the gym & walking a week (not counting taking the stairs at work, house cleaning, dancing with the kids, light arm weights, & sit-ups that I do at home) is sufficient exercise. I don't really snack and I don't have sugar in my coffee... When I do snack, it's always a LOW calorie snack depending on my craving (popcorn, pickles, fruits, veggies, or yogurt - sometimes I'll splurge with a greek frozen yogurt) I don't drink soda - EVER... and when I do have an occasional energy drink for a pick-me-up, I get the 0-cal/0-carb kind. I have to be cautious of those though, because I'm allergic to aspartame. I can do sucralose but not aspartame. I know for a fact that there are certain things that can cause you to gain weight even if you do everything by the book... My sister-in-law has something off in her system (something with her horemones or estrogen or something like that) & if she was speaking to me (she's one who thinks she's better than everyone) I'd find out what it was/is that she has & add that to my possibilities.

Certain measurements will increase with muscle gain though. The only way your measurements will decrease is if you build lean muscle. Looks like you are doing a lot of cardio but not strength training. The cardio will not build lean muscle and that - from what I'm reading - sound like what you need to add into your routine.
If you want to burn fat quickly with no exercise, check out the Keto diet. People have amazing results from it. However, its not a long term diet, but it gets your body into the gear of burning fat first, then everything else. May be the jump start you need.

Do not lose hope so easily is what i would advice. Right now what you can do is to continue what you have been doing all along, exercising, but in moderation. In the first place, over doing exercises is not a good way to maintain healthy lifestyle, nor is it good for dieting. You should consult fitness trainer as they will be able to tell you what type of exercise is suitable for you. There are actually many exercises out there created for different purposes. For example there are those specially for strength and build muscle mass, which is not what you want. Then there are those made to help people not only slim down but also tone their body to better shape. One of the best exercises to achieve this is running in my personal experience. Even for running, there are two types, one is to run your best within a short amount of time until you cant run any further, the other is to run normally conserving your energy for longer distance run over longer period of time. The second method is the one you should be doing, as it will burn more fats rather than the first one as you will tend to lose more energy faster with the first and stop running much more readily. The reason why you are gaining weight rather than losing perhaps it is because you are gaining muscle mass in the sense your fats are converted to muscles exactly so perhaps that is why there is no changes in measurement. Another possibility is because you are eating much more than usual and this increase in calorie is more than you losing calorie during exercises. You must control your eating more carefully but not to the extreme. Best is to approach training specialist.

OBVIOUSLY you missed the part in my post where I said I'm UNDER my recommended calorie intake! That is NOT the reason for the gain! My eating is controlled. I don't drink sodas or sugary drinks (even my morning coffee is without sugar - it's only flavored creamer and I count that calorie intake! When I go to the gym, I do the elliptical & the treadmill with the occasional circuit entwined.
