Being a animal lover and a person that stands up for animal rights, I always considered the Humane Society and I were on the same page. I often donated my time, some items that were needed and when I had it a little cash. Always thinking my good deeds were helping out the animals without voices. Although it may have helped out animals, I have began to rethink what the Humane Society stands for. I ran across a article on Facebook the other day that got me thinking. The article stated that the public had been led to believe that the humane society stands for animal rights and animal owners and with little funding still gets the job done. First let me say that they probably do care about neglect and absuse of animal and maybe they do get little funding. But doing a lot of research on my own I have discovered that many of it's employees are in fact not volunteers, they are paid employees, who make a descent living. How can you ask people to dig deep in the name of animals if your paying people a nice salary. The funds we donate do not trickle down to the local shelters. It stays in the hands of the Humane Society and is handed out as they choose. I'm sure they do some good for these poor animals, but I don't believe they support the local shelters as we were led to believe. If you donate, donate to a shelter in your area. Get to know the people and their causes. Know how your donations are being handled. Don't just give to a charity because it's hiding behind a known name.

I think that there are certain things that need to be done in a humane society facility that is something above what a volunteer could do. And, they should be compensated for their work. I would think that an animal lover such as yourself would want the animals to have these knowledgeable people available to them and, want them to have a decent salary. People can devote their lives to animals but, they need to live too.

Since I have my own little cat rescue, and while we aren't a register charity or anything, I also don't ask for donations. I don't really see a problem with staff getting paid, but I agree that little of the money that goes to the Humane Society goes to the animals. I have donated things to our local shelter.
