A luxury or a need?

My husband has his desktop computer at home. I want to have my own. However, if my in-laws will see it, I think they will become envious about it. They will think that we are living in luxury. But actually, we are not. I don't have a stable job yet and my husband is a professional househusband. Is having one, two or three computers at home a luxury or a need? What do you think about this? Happy myLotting everyone!

If you only have one income and not even a stable job, a second computer is indeed a luxury. A single computer is a luxury. However, the fact that YOU earn the money, means YOU have a say in how to spend it. Your in-laws need to mind their own business or find your husband a job, or better yet, pay your bills.

I want a more stable job. Even though I've been working for more than 4 years in my current job, I guess I won't grow old there. Our son is getting older so I need to have a more stable job and my husband needs to set up his business again. My husband is using the computer for my son's school projects. Nowadays, children needs to have researches, difficult homwork and projects, etc. We also use it to communicate with eachother. However, I don't have myown. I use my phone myLotting. At work, I can use my computer but I guess time isn't enough because I have to do my work and I don't have much free time. I want to earn extra income so I need to have my own too. For me, it is a need, for others they find it a luxury. Thanks for posting and happy mylotting.

Yes, I also hope I can make it happen. I don't know when will I buy. My boss has inconsistent decisions now so maybe I'll just keep my 13th month pay as my savings. I guess I need money for emergencies. Thanks again and happy mylotting.

I completely understand all of that. Obviously your child needs to be able to do his school work. I hope your husband can get his business up and running again. Maybe you will be able to work for him after he does it? I certainly feel as though my computer is a need. I bought a student machine right before I quit my last job just so I would have something until I could get another computer (my regular computer is pretty old). Good luck with everything, I hope you can find a way to make it happen!

Having a computer is fine if you can afford it. You can buy refurbished ones but they still cost a lot if you are a low income earner.
The other costs are the power to run one, two or three computers and let's not forget that with each extra computer you have the speed and data allowance will have to be stretched.
My internet connection costs me $40(Aus)a month and I certainly do not earn that much however, I live in a remote community so it is a connection to the outside world for me and therefore vital to my mental and social health.

Yes, I'm also thinking about it. There are some jobs here that include computers as one of the requirements. If I'd apply to that job at least I already have one. I guess, it will be my investment already. Thanks for posting and happy mylotting.

Hi angel. I think, having computers at home depends on the family financial status. If you have an income which can let you pay all those needs, bills, food, clothing, etc, then it would be okey if you have one. Another thing into consideration is the purpose why a person buys it. Maybe you have a plan to work hard earning money online, then I think you buy it. Just consider every factor that affects it before you buy, I know you can do it. Good Day! :)

Yes, I'm thinking to spend my 13th month pay for my own computer. I guess a netbook can do. I don't need an expensive one. You are right, I want to work hard online. Anyway, I still have a few months to decide about it. If I won't buy something, I will just save it in my bank account. Thanks for posting and happy mylotting.

It really depends on the dynamic of your family whether or not it is a luxury to have more than one computer in your home. Well, my husband and I have both had a desktop computer of our own from the time that we were married. This is something that we do need because of the fact that I make some money online and there are times that he does have to do some of his work at home since he writes computer programs for computer numeric controlled machines that he operates at the machine shop.

I bought my first desktop computer back in 2004 (8 years ago). I was excited back then. Since then, many things have been upgraded. Same type of computer with major upgrades would cost me half or less. Many computer prices (desktops & laptops) are getting affordable nowadays at least here in the US. Having a computer (desktop or laptop) is just like having a TV. In the future, internet and TV are getting more and more integrated that every household would need to have
Also, there are more possibilities of taking classes online. Years from now, you can more classes online. More and more work can be done at home so you don't have to go to a traditional office. Any productivity can be done at home and online more and more. It would be unavoidable for everyone to have a computer. Dad has one, mom has one, kids/children have one or each computer for each kid.

What difference does it make what your in-laws think? Are they the ones paying your bills? Are you living in their house? If the answer to both those questions is "no," it really does not matter what they think regarding what you spend your money on.
My boyfriend and I each have our own machine. Of course, I end up swiping his, because I like it better than my little netbook. It drives him crazy, but I think that he is starting to make peace with it. Once we are settled into a place for the long-term, I want to add a fast, powerful desktop to our line-up of machines.
I am all for simple living, but that does not mean that I am a technophobe. I value computers and recognize the near impossibility of functioning within modern society without them. I also do not believe in not buying things simply to avoid the wagging of parental or in-law tongues.

I think that when your life has a usefulneess for something and it gives something back to you thsn it is a need to call your own. Only when when that needs becomes something trivial in your life do you need to worry that it has become a luxury instead.

I guess what you're really concerned about is what your in-laws might say if ever you will buy a new computer, be it an affordable or expensive brand, because you don't have a stable job yet and your husband just stays at home. You might be thinking what they might think as to where you get the money to buy a new computer since your husband already has one. You can actually buy anything you desire because it's your prerogative but you're having second thoughts because you don't want to be thought of, especially by your in-laws, as someone who is luxurious but the truth is you are not. You are probably just too concerned on what they have to say that's why you are not too confident on your decision to buy a new computer.

If you are having very expensive computer at your residence then I will tell you are living an luxurious life. In my house there is 1 PC, 1 Laptop and a notebook. First I had the PC which I have been using for 13 years now. Once I have upgraded it. I bought this Laptop this year as I have been travelling too much this year. And the notebook is a birthday present to my mom. Her brother who stays in US has gifted her two years back.
Computer is a requirement. I feel you can buy an assembled PC it will cost less. My PC is an assembled one.

Oh, you have three and that's good. You can always use one if you need one. Thanks for posting and happy mylotting.

Having more than one computer at home is not at all a luxury these days. In fact these days in a middle class family all the earning member are having their own desktop or laptop. Specially when your husband is working at home so obviously he uses his own computer most of the time so I think its a need for you to get yourself a separate computer for yourself so that whenever required you too can work on your computer.

Why would you need another computer, is it for your work? And if you're saying your husband is a professional househusband, what is he doing in the computer? If you need the computer for work and your husband doesn't really need to use a computer, why not share? You said it yourself, you don't have a stable job yet. You must know the things your really NEED to buy, not things you WANT. Use your money for more meaningful things and save up. You can buy your own computer if you already have a stable job and save up a lot of money. Prioritize, prioritize, prioritize! :)

Actually, I bought it for my son's school needs. They only stay together at home. I work 90 hours away from home and there is no transportation for me to go home every night. Aside from our son's school project, we also use it in communicating with each other. I also want him to try some earning sites. I guess it's necessary for both of us to have our own computers. I also do myLot nowadays but I use my phone myLotting and it's inconvenient for me. I also wanna try article writing sites. Thanks for posting and happy mylotting.

I don't think you should make decisions about what you have in your house based on what you think your in-laws will think, rather you should base your decisions on what you actually need and can afford. If you both work on computers, a second computer is more necessary.

Having your own computer is not a luxury. I think you are thinking back to the old days when only business people, students at university, or important people need a computer and the only reason a wife needs it is to email everyone. But I was thinking, what if you now wanted to mylot and your husband was using the computer, it would be easy for you to use your own. Also if you wanted to find information and your husband was using the other computer, or if both of you wanted to find information on the same subject, and you did not have much time and you wanted it from different sources. Then is you need to print something out, but your husband is looking for some other information. I could go on and on.
Yes you need your own computer.

Yes, I agree with you. It's inconvenient to use just one computer. We couldn't use it at the same time, one of us should go first and the other should wait for his or her turn. Then, it's definitely a need and not a luxury. Thanks for posting and happy mylotting.

I think in your situation you do not need an extra computer right now. You can take turns using the computer at home. Unless otherwise you're gonna use the extra computer for work or for something that you need to do that will perhaps provide you extra earning. But if you see the need, regardless of whatever reason and you can afford, why not? It is your decision and I do not see any reason why your in laws should be envious about it unless you and your family rely to them for your daily needs.

We don't rely to them our daily needs. I am working instead of their son. Right now, they don't even have jobs already because my father-in-law is already old and his wife is just a plain housewife. I don't know but sometimes they can't help being envious if they see something new in our house. LOL. Thanks for posting and happy mylotting.

What may be a luxury for some people might be Necessity for others... You have to remember why you need a second computer... If your husband needs the computer for long periods at a time & you need to do things on it as well, then yeah, get one... If you want one just so you can have one but not really for any particular reason, then it's a luxury... I bought my girlfriend a computer because I work with mine... I'm on it for hours at a time, on an average may be 4 to 6 hours a day... She needed one to get stuff done like paying bills & keeping touch with her family & friends & little bit of work related stuff... I got her a desktop & I have a laptop & iPad... When I'm not using mine, she has full access so it's not like she can't get on computer... It's just easier for us to have 2 computers at home since I'm on it so much...

Yes, for now it's already a necessity. We can do a lot of things using a computer. Before, we only used it for finding information and typing works. LOL. Now, we use it for different things. We can have online jobs, we can pay our bills, we can use social networking sites such as Facebook, Tagged, Multiply, etc. and instant messengers to talk with our relatives and friends working abroad or in other cities, etc. It's no longer limited to one or two uses. So, I agree with you, it's already a need and not a luxury.

I don't think so, no. A computer serves a lot of purpose and having each one for you and your husband is okay. Now when you buy those expensive models and change computers each time a new model was released now that's a luxury. Would you believe that me and my husband have our own separate laptops, and he wouldn't even let me borrow his? Because our laptops are stored with files and programs that cater specifically to our needs and work. We also have bookmarked the browsers to certain sites that we frequent that is critical to out work or day to day activity. For example, if you open my husband's laptop, you will see spreadsheets of number of hours work of his staff per project per site, a software to backup his Blackberry, AutoCad and Lotus Notes and bookmarked sites for newspapers, his e-books, etc. I on the other hand have my laptop filled with Financial Statements, Household Expenses, online banking, costing, Accounting Software, some games (LOL), my e-books and recipes. Just imagine if we need to use the computer and each time we will have to ask one another if he or she is going to use it. Imagine the load of programs that we need. And what if we both need to use the computer at the same time?
There are lots of computers out there that doesn't cost that much but works as well to suit your needs.
Also, as a side note, you live with your in-laws?

I don't live with my in-laws. We live next to each other's houses. They can just peep in house anytime they want to. LOL. Yes, I got your point. I guess we also have to have our own computers. For the reason that we can't use one computer at the same time. It's not a luxury if we'll just buy affordable ones. Thanks for posting and happy mylotting.
