Are you ashamed of being a soap opera fan?

I am not a big fan of local soap operas, but there are a few shows that I enjoy following. I just think that most soaps are too dragging and exagerrated.
Oh well, we don't have cable or satellite channels, so I'm stuck with local programs.
I used to be uncomfortable talking about local soap opera with co-workers. I was too concerned that they might think I'm a very shallow person.
When I hear others talking about soap opera episodes, I would pretend that I can't relate or that I'm not familiar with their topic.
Do you have the same feeling?

Well, I am also watching soap opera's and they good sometimes. Why should we shy to other people if they know that we watch those soap opera's. They are good to relieved stress sometimes if the story is good.
I am always watching korean drama, and I really love it. Most of the korean drama, are much better than the local Philippine, soap opera.

They have very minimal kissing scenes, and not bed scenes, at all.

I am not much of a Korean drama fan. I like their feel-good love story soaps, though. The good thing about Korean telenovelas is that they're very wholesome and safe for kids to watch.

Oh well, why would i be ashamed of being a soap opera watcher?
In our office, you are not "in" if you can't relate to the soaps the previous night that they are talking about.
At the moment, the only soap i watch is Walang Hanggan. Though , i don't watch religiously, because i don't like love stories, specially that it's Julia who is paired with Martin.

I think you office mates are "sosyal". They prefer those English programs than local ones.

I've actually talked to my aunt about it before. She didn't react much. I don't know if she wasn't interested, or was trying to evade from the topic.

The sad thing is, people in the office talk about foreign soaps or tv series. And, I can't relate because I don't get to watch those at home.

It depends, I am a male but soap operas are really nice. But girls would always question me because of this. Because in our culture only girls should watch this and boys should watch action movies.

I don't agree with the girls in your place. I think any gender can choose to watch soap operas. My husband even enjoys listening to me when I tell him what happened on last night's episode. He doesn't get to watch it because he's working at night.

I haven't been in touch with the soaps in ABS-CBN, anymore. I do hear good feedback about one of those, but never got the chance to really follow it. I'm stuck with GMA.

I love soap operas. It just shows how well Filipinos can be, especially in plotting a good story. I don't think that being addicted to soap operas makes you shallow. I even try to catch up on some shows that I miss on tv. Don't be ashamed. It's something to be proud for. Even other nationalities love their own dramas, so why can't we?

However, tv series in the Philippes are just too much drama. I noticed tv series in the US, for example, may be about love, but it also has other elements with it, that makes the story more interesting.

Yes, and there are also dramas in the US that are boring.. It's the same all over. You just don't notice it. But it's not a reason that I would be ashamed of what I'm watching.

Yeah, probably we don't notice them because they get cancelled or taken out before it even hits other countries, because of low ratings. Just like here, they would cut the story short and not let a program run longer if its not getting much popularity.

Yes, you are true. For this reason, I have a different group of people who also love Local Soap Operas. And believe me, in my group everybody is just crazy about these Operas. If we miss someday due to any reason, we will never miss its repeat telecast. So, in this way you can enjoy your passion also.

That's a fun group to be with. With the stress you get from work, chatting about the soap opera episodes from the previous night is indeed a good way to cool down and de-stress.

I'm not ashamed at all of being a soap opera fan, I just can't get enough of the drama and fakeness I think it's great. If a conversation is going on about my favorite soap opera ( Days of Our Lives) I will join right in and share the laughs, sometimes I will even voice my view on what kind of storylines they should come up with next.

I am not ashamed of being a soap opera fan because it is a Filipino culture and tradition already. . . most of the households are doing this and that there is nothing wrong on it.

I hear people referring to soap operas as something that only nannies and maids can enjoy. It's also very common for housemaids to be talking endlessly about it, like nothing else matters. So, probably that's how people link soap operas to them.

you shouldnt feel ashamed of watching soap operas^^ even more because phillipines soap operas are one of the best in the world^^ you should be proud of watching it. about me i like to watch it sometimes but in my country most part of soap operas are very similar. even though sometimes some are original but its rare^^ you shouldnt be ashamed of watching it. bcs you like it it doesnt mean you are a shallow person. a soap opera is like series like "heroes" or "desperate housewives" or any other^^ its entertainment for people. and besides everyone likes series. so you have the right to like soap operas^^

Although I'm not a fan of soap operas, my mom and my wife do watch them even if we have cable T.V. and I don't think they are shallow, it's just their own preference which I respect, so my wife and my mom would sometimes be talking about past episodes. I don't think anybody should be ashamed if they love what they are doing and it does not affect them, what's more important is to be realand why care so much about what other people say just because you enjoy doing a certain thing?

How nice of you to support your mom and wife's preference. Some men would complain about such interest of women. They would criticize women for enjoying soap operas.

Really?! You're in Italy, but you still crave to see Filipino local shows. That's so nationalistic of you. A lot of Filipinos here don't even recognize most of the local celebrities because they watch foreign shows and tv programs on cable, more than they enjoy the local programs.

I used to be embarrassed admitting that I watch any soap opera, that was way back in high school and college. Now that I'm a mom, not anymore. I guess, when you get older you tend to be drawn to these things eventually as your tastes constantly change. When I was younger I would always watch teeny bopper shows, but now I'd rather watch soaps than those because I just realized how lame they can be. haha

That's so true. Although, I still enjoy watching teenage shows, once in awhile. Since, Im staying at home now, I really got no choice but to watch those soaps until I fall asleep at night. I hope they'd come up with really good ones. I think those soaps in the afternoon primetime are not so well thought of and the storylines are really dragging. What do you think?

hi jureathome my reapond is why if soap opera makes you relaxed after work. everyone has his own choice for entertainment and leisure. there's no need to think over other's views on your own personal affairs. in my opinion, people who love soap operas must be happier since they have a simpler mind lol.

I liked to watch the local soap operas many years ago. I was attracted by the plot. So I watched many episodes at a time on computer, because I wanted to know the what the ending was. It was so long that even I watched many it still took me a long time to finish it. But once I knew the the ending, I felt boring . Now I seldom watch the local soap operas, sometimes I watch English movie online, sometimes I watch American soap operas, anyway, I can improve my English by that even though it also takes up my time.
