I just want to say we're so different. In our country, it's very commom to use some video like this to teach us english, we also watch some movies, such as friends, which is so popular. And as a english major, it's really a challenge for us to listen and see without subtitle. So we need to adapt to it. And sometimes, aithough we can listen, but some different cultures make us puzzle and misunderstand. But luckily, i think it's a very helpful way to improve our listening skills and comprehension ability.

Catherine, I know it is difficult sometimes to understand because of the way people speak. I have a hard time understanding some of the people in my own family and they were born here! The most beneficial thing from movies in English is to see how words are used. Of course you can see this better in a book, but when someone is speaking in a movie you hear the words and you can apply them in context to the situation. This is important because Americans in particular can use one word with different meanings. American English also contains French, German and Spanish (and more) words (though a lot of Americans don't know it) because of the way the language and cultures have evolved as people immigrated here. It's all very convoluted, lol. Even though the langugage comes from England, it's spoken differently here. I find that watching older movies is best; I do it myself sometimes when I find I am picking up bad habits from people who speak informally or "improperly."
