I have had to replace a couple of books. I have never lost any of them, but we had to replace some books because they got damaged.
I damaged one book in the car. I had a book on my lap and a cup of coffee in my hand. Suddenly another car almost hit our car and my husband had to move our car very quickly. A few seconds later the library book was soaked in coffee.
Our dog has also damaged a couple of library books. At first he ate one of the books (there were a few pages left) and then he peed on the other one He was still a puppy at that time and fortunately he doesn't touch the library books today.
Have you lost or damaged any library books? What happened?

Well that was the first time the excuse - the dog ate my homework could actually be true. The only time I had to replace a library book was a few years ago, I had taken out a book, and had a lot of errands to run on the day it was due - I ran into a friend and asked him to drop it off in the collection bin since the library was already closed. He said sure, well he says he did, but the library charged me for it. That was really annoying. I don't go to the library as much now as I did when I was younger, because I buy books in thrift shops (along with other stores which often have sales), and since they are quite cheap, I can get a few and not worry if I take a year to read one, as is the case of one that I have on my bedside table, or if it gets sand and water on it when I go to the beach. If I had to replace every book that happens too, well. The books I do loan from libraries are normally books I can't find or are too expensive so I am very careful with them because I definitely do not want to pay for a replacement.

That has happened to me too once or twice before, misplaced dvds which were not correctly returned that I fortunately found in time, that book was placed in a holding container like a post box that books were returned to, I suspect that someone fished it out, but whoever has it, it was really annoying to pay for a book that I can't even call my own.

Yes, in this case the dog actually ate the book. The librarian laughed when she saw the book and she told us that they had experienced the same thing before, but of course we had to replace the book. Our dog was a puppy at that time and fortunately he doesn't touch the books today. It must have been annoying for you to get charged for the book that your friend was supposed to return. I haven't experienced that situation, but I have had been charged for a cd that I knew that I had returned. I went to library, found the cd on the shelf, showed it to the librarian and and asked her to cancel the fine. If your friend did return the book it could have been the staff at the library who made a mistake.

Books below one dollar that is really cheap. We can sometimes find books for a dollar in the second hand shops, but most of the the books in the second hand shops cost at least 4 dollars. I like to visit the second hand shops, because I really like to read and I can't afford to buy new books all of the time. I hope that I won't have to replace anymore library books in future. Fortunately my dog isn't a puppy anymore, and I don't think that he is going to eat my books again.

As a kid I lost quite a few of my library books or I returned them late and my mother had to pay the fees for this. Normally I would end up finding my library books after the fact, but by the time I found them we had so many late fees tacked on that it was more worth it just to buy it.

I also lost some library books when I was a child, but parents wouldn't pay for them. I had to pay for them out of my own money. I had a funny experience one time when I couldn't find a library book. My grandmother came over for a visit and she decided to help me look for the book. She found it, and I still remember the funny look on her face when she discovered that it was a book about love and s*x! I am sure that she was expecting to find a fairytale book or something like that

Hi Porcospino
I lost a library book when I was new and just learned cycling. It was in 1987-88 when I had learned to ride and asked a friend to allow me to ride his bicycle to the school. I had a kind of reporters bag those days for school (this is a kind of a hanging bag which doesnt have a zipper or a button to close the bag on top), I had stuffed my books and even this one "The Solar System and the Sun" which I had from our school library. On the way, I got imbalanced and fell from the cycle (the cycle was a bigger one and my feet couldnt touch the ground when I had to stop and as I was new, I didnt know the tricks either). Though nothing serious happened to me, but my pens, and this book fell out (i guess this is what happened) but I was more focussed on my fall and felt embarrassed. I quickly got up, and drove to school - only when I was at the library to return the book, I realized that I had lost it and even the pens. I had to pay twice the costs for the book as per the rules as the book wasnt available in any of the book stores (those days we had only a couple of book seller shops here and it was a small town). Even I had to borrow a pen from my friend to write out.
The worst which happened in all this was that I lost the Pen as it was of my late grandfather and had a gold nib (I used fountain pens those days and I still love them - but today the ones which are available are much costly and even dont write that great). But my grandfather never said anything to me about losing that pen of his, he only said, to learn my lesson from this - When in a mess, care for yourself first and Never about what others (onlookers) would think about - if I had followed this, maybe I would have looked around for the things which had popped out from my bag.

I understand your reaction after the fall. I would also have felt embarrassed or be afraid that people would laugh at me or tease me. Not today, but when I was young. What your grandfather said was very true, we shouldn't care so much about te things that other people think and we shouldn't refrain from picking up the items that we lost because we are afraid what other people would think. But I think that we are not always mature enough to understand that when we are very young, and I still remember the time when other people's opinions mattered a lot more to me than they do today.

Nope, not for library books as I always keep them in a safe place. But I have ever damaged my friend's novel and I felt really bad. First thing is because I would feel really annoyed when it happens to MY own books! I would be very mad to people who do it. And second, I know this friend is also a book freak like I am, so I know how she felt. Maybe because it's me who broke it, she didn't get angry. I brought her novel to the bathroom and when I tried to put it on the counter, I apparently didn't put it correctly so it fell and got wet. I planned to buy her with the new one but she said it's alright.

I am always afraid to experience the same thing when I borrow a book from a friend. I don't want to damage my own books either, but it is still a little different if I have bought the book myself. It would be easier to replace it if is my own book, and I don't have to feel bad about it if it is my own book. Today I don't borrow books from friends that often, because most of my friends don't love books as much as I do. I get most of my books from the library or from second hand shops because I can't afford to buy new books that often.

I so agree. That's why I felt bad when I broke my friend's book. I rarely borrow books from the library as I know I won't have much time to read now. That's why I choose to buy new books as I can read them anytime.

I haven't gone to a library in a long time.
When I was younger i know I lost a few. My parents had to pay for those books and one of them or two we didn't have to pay for because the librarian said it was given to the library for free as a donation so it wasn't that they lost the money for it. But I felt bad for those. I've always been taught the good of books and that you should treat them well. This was our teaching as younger children and I try to teach my nieces this same thing.
I never damaged a book so bad that I had to replace it or pay for it though.

I think it is important to learn to treat books well. I don't have any children yet, but it is one of the things that I am going to teach my children as well. I grew up in a family where we had many books and my father took very good care of them and he was reluctant to let people borrow his books because he was afraid that they wouldn't take care of them or that they wouldn't return them. I let people borrow my books (or most of my books) and I know that my friends take good care of them.

I had a friend similar to what you described. She even had moments where I thought she might not let me take some of her books. In a way it is kind of like the perservation of knowledge or something like that
It is a good thing to teach. I think it will give them respect for the book and also maybe curiousity of what's in there!

No, because if I had I then know that I would have to pay for the book, and some of those books can cost a lot of money to replace, and some can't be replaced.
I have had many of friends who have lost and damaged them, and yes, they did have to pay for them.

Yes, some of those books are very expensive. Fortunately the book that my dog had chosen to "read" (eat) wasn't one of the expensive books, but I still wished that he hadn't damaged the books. He is not a puppy anymore and he doesn't touch the books anymore, and I hope that I will never have to replace a library book again.

i have lost a couple and ended up paying for them. our library is pretty forgiving. however, once they accused me of not returning a book. it was a book about the 20th century that had entries for each year, so it was quite large. i told them that i returned it and the librarian who called me said
'okay, let me take a look' and so she did and came back to the phone just to tell 'yes, it is on the shelf'.

I let my neighbor borrow my library books. I thought she was going to drop them off at the library when she was done. They were small paperback romance novels, worth $7.99 bought new. She never turned them in. I got a notice from the library that they were overdue. Needless to say the neighbor never did turn them in and they were lost. Well I tried to find the same titles to turn them in as replacements. They would not accept the replacements because they did not have the same ISBN #. So the exact same books by the same author but different ISBN #'s and they would not accept them. They wanted $25 each for these $8 books. I was floored. I eventually paid them off but I think they really railroaded me.

No, I've always tried to take very good care of library books. I've kept them longer than I should have in some cases and wound up returning them way late.
Once, in our neighborhood, I found a library book in the gutter. It looked like it had seen rain and hail, and it was so soggy, but I did what I thought I should do and returned it to the library it belonged to. I felt a little second-hand embarrassment, coming in with a nasty library book I knew someone else was going to take the fall for replacing.

I damaged the book in the car by accident and our dog also damaged two books, but aside from that I also take very good care of the library books. I know that other people are going to use them after me, so I don't want to damage them, and like you say they belong to the library and I don't own them, that is another reason to take good care of them. I borrow a lot of books every month and I think that it is really nice that we are able to borrow books for free and I appreciate that. I hope that it remains that way.

I have lost plenty of books. I have so many books that i think some are mixed up in mine. I've lost some while moving. Some I believe friends "borrowed" them. I just buy my books now me and the library are not compatible, and I've had to pay them $45 too.

I use the library a lot, but there are certain advantages about buying books instead of borrowing them. When you own the books you don't have to worry about losing the books or returning them late. I have started buying many of my books in second hand shops, because it is cheaper than buying new books all the time. In my family there is another advantage about buying books - I don't have to replace them if the dog eats them But hopefully that isn't going to happen again and he is not a puppy anymore.

The last time I can remember damaging a book was during primary school. At the time, I didn't know I had damaged it at first. I put the book in my backpack; however, I did not remember, I had left my lunch in the same pocket of the backpack. When I got home, I opened my backpack; it seems my chocolate milk drink spilled its content all over the pages. Unfortunately, the book was paperback and a bit worn out already, which meant some of the pages just dropped off from the spine of the book. I felt so bad that I tried telling my mom that I would try to pay for it with my piggy bank money. Although it was just a handful of coins, I learned never put library books in the same backpack pocket as the pocket with food.

I no longer visit the library since I often do my research on the net. But during my high school days and college days, I frequent the library for research and sonetimes borrow books. Gladly I have never lost any and have not damaged any. I had an account with or city library and it's very great with no history of lost or damage books and not even a penalty for late return.
