Gingivitis is caused by plaque buildup, food particles and bacteria. You need to make sure you are brushing your teeth twice a day and for a few minutes, take your time and don't brush too hard. Once you are done brushing you need to floss. Flossing is actually quite an important step as it loosens all that stuff between your teeth that your toothbrush can't get. Once that is done use a good mouthwash. Also make sure you clean your tongue as that hold on to a lot of bacteria as well. Do this and see if the gum swelling goes down, if not you need to go to the dentist
