It is an immune deficiency disease - you can't catch it from someone else. I am not sure exactly why but it makes you very tired and your muscles ache all the time. At least that is what is going on with me. Thanks for asking

Immune deficiency disease is what many doctors guess it to be, as well as articles online. I don't believe that for a minute.
Since having it since the age of 14, I noticed my immune system is wonderful. I'm lucky that I rarely get any colds and flu.
It's more known as a muscular skeletal disorder.

I've had it for 20 years now, and I'm 34.
If you feel your muscles have a bruised feeling or are hard and tense in more than 11 places on your body, chances are you have it.
I started with getting headaches at the age of 14, and then I started getting hard/tense muscles behind my neck shortly after. Now, I have over 50 trigger points on my body.
All I'm able to take is tons of ibuphrophen. Narcotics always make things worse, especially the next day.
You may also want to ask your doctor to check your blood sugar level. Fibro can be caused from having hypoglycemia. And hypoglycemia can also cause Fibro. I have never believed that car accidents, etc can cause this illness. It's so darn complicated, though.
Good luck with everything!

Wow, I hope you aren't in pain everyday. My hubby is a diabetic so I have checked my blood sugar. I had not heard that though. My neck muscles, hips and thighs are the worse. I have headaches too but I thought they were migraines because light and noise really bothers me. Oh yeah, and perfume. Thanks for the info

Car accidents can kick this in! I'm living proof of it. 3 years ago I was hit by a drunk driver and I've had Fibro symptoms ever since. So far nothing much has helped me. The most relief I've found has been massage, but the pills in any form have done nothing.
Part of the reason you hurt all over is because FM won't let your body get all the way into your deep sleep which is when the body normally rests and heals itself.
Many doctors aren't aware of this 'syndrome' or are poorly educated about it so read as much as you can to educate yourself.

pnstate1986, it is so amazing how some of us can have the exact same symptoms while others are different.
Perfume, colognes, and strong cleaning agents have been taken out of the house because it makes my headaches worse, and the back of my neck muscles tense up. Darn strange, isn't it?
What's a shame about it is that I have two daughters who are 12 and 15, and they want to wear perfumes and hair sprays, and they even sneak it when I tell them how it affects me. I feel so bad at times.
Another thing is that my 15 year old has now started getting trigger points and headaches. It's so saddening thinking that I could've gave this to her. I do believe it can be genetic.
And thank you for the pencil. =)

Reducing stress is the most important thing you can do for fibromyalgia. This illness is proof that stress damages your health. I was in an abusive marriage for 23 years and had gotten so sick I could barely move. I finally kicked him to the curb and am doing much, much better. I am not suggesting you are in an abusive marriage (although research shows that most, but not all, women with fibromyalgia are), but if there's anything you can do to reduce your stress I am living proof that it makes a world of difference.

I've had fibromyalgia for years. sometimes the pain gets so bad that I can't even move. The best advice I have for you: take GREAT care of yourself and start early. There are many good books out there and most lead to the same thing. Excersise, make sure you're getting good sleep, drink lots of water, rest in between activities if you're in pain (don't just keep going or you'll get worse), take vitamins, eat a healthy balanced diet, etc. I'm going back to school to work with people with non-terminal chronic diseases like fibro as an advocate, so I"ve done a lot of research. If you tell me your specific symptoms, I'd love to try and help.

My symptoms are pain when you touch me, almost anywhere, but especially in my hip area and my lower legs. I have fatigue and extreme thirst. I have headaches and neck problems. My husband recently started working a different shift and now that I sleep alone, the fatigue is not as bad. I guess he must have been disturbing me. Celebrex helps me a lot. It is so noticeable that once I accidently dropped it in my car without knowing and was trying to figure out why I was having such a painful day and then I found it. I also pee a lot. I have been tested for diabetes and I don't have that. I would be interested in your feedback. I know that I have to start walking or something but I also have arthritis in my feet, so it is not that easy either. I guess I should start swimming a the YMCA.

I have had symptoms for years yet every time I went to a physician, tests would come back negative for a variety of things and they could never find a medical issue. Finally my doctor and I discussed the probability of my having this disorder. The sleep disturbances caused horrible problems because my body was never getting any recouperative rest to heal and maintain itself. I went on sleep aids for over a year and a half. They did help some but did not alleviate the pain. Fairly recently I read some articles on the benefits of chiropractic care for Fibro patients. There was a free seminar at my local library on this exact subject so I went and got some great info. Shortly thereafter I went to a chiropractor for the first time in my life and what a difference it has made. I'm sleeping better and having less pain episodes. My outlook has improved. I used to suffer migraines 3-5 times a month and since treating with my chiropractor have had only 2 in 3 months. I would highly recommend looking into this form of "therapy" for anyone with Fibromyalgia.

Wow, I will try the chiro - I think it is allowed on my insurance, so it would only be a co-pay. I hope I get the results you did.

Additionally, many medicines can help with the symptoms but do not actually "solve" or "correct" any of the problem which create those symptoms. Did you know that each medicine on the market has an average of 8 different side effects too? So we take a medicine to help with the pain and end up with liver problems or ulcers. There's got to be a better way.

Fibromyalgia is kind of a disease they call something when they can not explain it, meaning it has so many symptoms that they can only call it this. I am not saying it is not a Real disease, but smetimes chemicals used in your home can cause this too, to alleviate it you may want to consider using toxic free type cleaners in your home
check out my website at www.freewebs.com/gandashopping and look at the cleaners on my page, then also go to www.saferforyourhome.com
I strongly believe that if you change what yu use in your home to healthier products it will relieve a lot of yur symptoms, and do change diet can help too...
good luck to you

I have extreme muscel spazems. I get low grade fevers about 100 degrees at most when the pain gets extreme. I have extreme fatique, and must sleep at least 9 hours in order to be able to get through the next day. My doctor tested me by pushing on certain points in my back and then a few minutes later I was litterally screaming in pain from the spazems. Also the cold very badly effects it and can cause spazems. And after the spazems stop an all over ache comes on. I also get sharp pains in my legs. If you are only having low grade systoms you may just have too many toxins in your system. I would suggest lots of water and hot baths and massage therapy. Also lots of vitamins.

My older sister had it. She passed away 4 years ago, but not due to the fibromyalgia she had. Hers was brought on after she went through a really bad break-up and was majorly depressed. It was the stress from it all that brought hers on. She too took the supplements and had her good and bad days. She tried to exercise when the pain was not so bad that seemed to help her keep it a level she could handle better.
Her fatigue and pain was so bad for her the last few years she was alive that she ended up having to be put on disability as she was not able to work. Her doctor had her on a schedule of naps every 2 hours, so she could still function somewhat normally.
I hope they find a cure for all of you that have to deal with it now and I hope that happens real soon.

I have it. Fibromyalgia is often hand in hand with chronic fatigue syndrome, which I also have. The symptoms of CFS are:
Sore throats, extreme exhaustion after exertion, memory loss, difficulty concentrating, unexplained muscle soreness, headaches, painful lymph nodes in neck and underarms, sleep disturbance and dizziness.
With both CFS and Fibromyalgia it is important to get plenty of sleep and drink a whole lot of water. In fact, water can cure just about any health issue if you drink enough of it. All health problems stem from too much sugar and processed foods and not enough water.
I would like to recommend an excellent book: "Your body's many cries for water" by Dr. F. Batmanghelidj, M.D. I got mine at a local health food store, but if you cannot find it there, I see a website on the cover of the book. www.watercure.com

Mine started after a bad car accident where we were rear ended by a huge truck when we were sitting at a red light. The truck had a trailer on the back and a car on the trailer so it was a lot of weight. It hit us really hard. It pushed my entire trunk completely in. The very best thing I have found to help me live a normal life is called reliv. It really works. My distributor is on my friend list. Just go to my profile and find JaniceCaswell. She has an earth symbol for her picture. She can arrange for the product to be shipped to you directly from reliv headquarters. It works and it has a money back guarantee if you don't like it. My health is of a good enough quality where people don't even realize I have fibromyalgia and CFS. I wish I could take it regularly, but I am unemployed right now so I am not taking it like I should be, in fact, it is very hit or miss, but at least I am up and about. If someone could afford to take it two and three times a day, they would be as normal as any healthy person.

Thanks for the advice, Tonya. I have really been sick lately so I will try it. Sorry I haven't been on the internet. My step-daughter is here from Fl and monopolizes it. LOL

Do some research online at reputable sites like WebMD, Mayoclinic.com, etc. A number of autoimmune diseases like FM have similar symptoms, so try to learn as much about them as possible. If you're not sure of the diagnosis you might try consulting another doctor for a second opinion.
Some good books have been published in the last few years; you can try doing a search on Amazon.com or your local library. If I can find the titles of some I've heard of I'll post them here.

I've had fibromyalgia for a few years now. I take all kinds of supplements. My worst symptom seems to be the pain.

I did research on it, I mean a lot of research. I talked to other people that have it. Some are doing better than other's. I get tired a lot easier, but I can deal with that. The pains are worse in my arms and legs. Been noticing that my knees also hurt. Because fibro effects the ligments. Walking hurts sometimes. But hey I could be doing a lot worse.
I have that saying there are people with this that are a lot worse off, so shut up get going and stop complaining. This helps me to get through the day and night.

I don't know if this will help but a friend of mine was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. She did some research and then eliminated aspartame (Equal) and MSG (see http://www.truthinlableling.org/hiddensources.html) from her food and drinks and within 30 days she was almost symptom free. She said sometimes if you have too much of these in your diet, you become sensitive to them and the symptoms/side effects can make fibromyalgia worse or even be the cause of the symptoms. It might be worth a try.

The sooner you accept your doctor's diagnosis the better it will be for you. i fought it for years cause I didn't want to believe it either. Start aloowing your doctors to treat you. not everything works and it takes time to find something that helps. I suggest also that you find a good support group. They are going to be a lifeline when everything and everyone starts turning away.

I don't know why you wouldn't want to belive it. Me, I'm trying to GET diagnosed with it because I need to be releived of the pain, the tiredness, the mood swings and the depression. If this diagnosis will help make my life better then I'm all for it. I would think anyone would want the same thing. From what I've read, it's not life threatning, it doesn't get worse, it doesn't cripple you.. a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia for you would mean you would feel better.. isn't that all anyone wants?
