My future dil is buying a house here in town. She has been living an hour away. The person who was to be out by the end of July was still in there earlier this week, but she is gone now. Left the house in a mess. T_____ the young lady was supposed to have to pay rent until the house closes, as she took possession last night, but she and the realtor walked through and he told her she would not be paying any rent due to having to clean up the mess . Officially they are not to change the locks yet, either, but he told her that based on how the other person was being, to go ahead and do it. She is cleaning and my son is changing locks right now. It is an old house, but to me those houses have charm. I can hardly wait to see the improvements. There is also a lovely rose garden outside in the back. It is work, but it will be good for her to have a house instead of an apartment.

That's just great GG! It will be nice to have them so close to home. I love and much prefer, the older houses. I think they are better built and much more personal and cozy. The Rose garden sounds just beautiful. Does your future dil like to garden? It all sounds like so much fun and I bet they're thrilled to pieces. Are you sure the other lady wasn't coming back to clean?

No, the other lady said she was done. T_____has been in apartments for years so has not had much of a chance to garden. My son still lives with me and for various reasons will for another year. He will get to visit her much more often and spend more time with her now that she is in town. This puts her closer to her family as well. The floors in some of the rooms are laid in what is called the "picture frame" style. Oak strips that get bigger and bigger in concentric rectangles.

Awww, I'm so happy for the two of them! I think they will have fun fixing up the house now that they are closer to each other. It will be fun hearing all of their ideas, which I hope you tell us, haha. I'm pretty sure I know what you're talking about with the picture frame style wood floors and they are beautiful if taken care of. I think you should get some before and after pic's for us to see. How much fun is that!!

That's awesome! Sometimes the bad brings a little good. The house my parents live in now they normally could never afford. But the family that was living there had it foreclosed on. Not only that, they left the house in awful condition inside. The floor had to be removed down to the cement, there was no insulation in one bathroom, and there were holes in the bottom of one wall. So my parents got it on a steal. And my dad is so good at finding bargains. So little by little they fixed it up nice.

That is how it is done. T____has cute ideas. She is on disability but would like to work part time, but she is really good at cake decorating and I would love to see her business in that area take off.

How fun! A long time ago the church my dad was pastoring did "talents", like the parable. They handed out ten dollars to everyone who wanted to participate, and gave two months to turn it into something more. I decided to do cake decorating. This was quite some time ago so things were a lot cheaper. I bought bear shaped cake tins and made and decorated teddy bear cakes. I had so much fun, and they were really popular. At the time a daycare was attached to the church. I sold them like hotcakes at the daycare! And the tools that they use to put the icing in and then decorate have come a Loooong way since then.

Sounds like you're very happy that they're moving close by. Sounds like the last people werern't very nice. But the new locks and finally getting to move in is great. I think we'll be having more discussions about wonderful things like a wedding. I'm happy for you and once it's cleaned up, them, too.

I am happy that although my son got off on a wrong track for a while, he is back on track and this young lady really loves him and they are making great decisions. She makes him smile and her good planning is helping make sure they all have a good future. She was going to move here regardless, and I am happy that they will own their own place.

T_____definitely has some cute ideas. I wish I had money, I would help her get to them. The oak floors need some TLC but are really pretty. I find the little nooks and stuff in the house charming.

Some old houses are more economical than new ones. That is what they found with this one.

You mean if your future DIL anticipates that person by cleaning up the mess and changing locks, she won't pay rent.If so, it is great.I wonder if Your future DIL will use the house as bridal chamber. The reason why I ask you this question is that over here the bridegroom's side buys the house as bridal chamber for the most part.

Because T____ and my son V_______ are willing to do the clean up and the realtor does not have to pay an outside company they are able to move in and start moving things. It will be another year until they get married, but my son will help pay and will do the work on the house and will get a loan to do some repairs. It is a modern world and families share expenses. Sometimes families do not help at all, but we are all supporting this, her family and mine. When couples get married here they often take a special trip.

Over here, since most of young people are only child, now more and more families share expenses. However, no matter whether they make a special trip or not,in general they must hold the wedding feast.

Sounds great! Old houses can be charming and the rose garden is a wonderful bonus. It will seem more like theirs after putting in the work to clean. My daughter moved from an apartment to a house this year and it was a mess, too. After cleaning, painting and repairing, it's beautiful now.

That's awesome! Five kinds of roses should make a good show, once they've been taken care of. It sounds like they're off to a good, practical start.

I always find old houses to have more personality. I counted five kinds of roses that were blooming in spite of the drought and neglect. The updates will depend on the income that comes in and her budget. My son still lives with me and is paying off some debts so that they will have a good start next September (2013) but she is delighted to have a place that is hers.

I have never heard of a new homeowner having to pay rent! She owns the house, the loan is approved, and it's the former owner who should be paying the rent. I would look into this if I was her. I think the realty company is trying to pull a fast one.

Actually, she took early possession, as the grant papers are stuck in snail mail. Yes, the former owner should have paid a month's rent. T______and my son are hauling away a lot of junk, and so they company is happy because they do not have to pay a professional cleaning service to take care of this mess. The rent would have been $16 per day for early access.

I know everything you went through with your fil's place. I do not think this is as bad. I think the woman had just given up on getting done and had no help. She had had some pets, as well, but not too many. Traci is having a ball with deciding what she wants to do. It is more than she has been paying, but my son will be able to help. He will still live with us this next year and that is a long story I am not privileged to share. They will still spend a lot more time together and make decisions together. He changed the locks for her this afternoon.

I never for a moment thought it was as bad as this place was. I'm sure she wouldn't have bothered with the house if it was as bad. The only reason we bothered was because it was partly for FIL that we did it, and the other part was basic desperation. It would have been years before we could have gotten a house on our own and the situation in our trailer was stressful and miserable. We're happy now. We still have some work to do with the house, it's not really ready for guests or anything, but it's livable which is the important thing.

Hiya GG, Good news that very good news as well. Glad to see that she is moving so near to you as well. I love Rose Gardens there was one where we lived before it was never ours but to look at the Roses was a pleasure enough by itself. Hope she has fun decorating it all. Good luck.xxx

Hiya GG, Plenty can be done in Houses like that if this place were mine it would cost me a fortune to put it right and it is quite new. A Constructor advised me personally not to even bother as it is not worth it in other words and he is very experienced so I take his word for it. When something is built with bad quality materials you might as well knock it down and start all over. Older Houses are made of much better stuff and they can take overhauls to the interior and exterior this would not take that very much afraid and I was so taken aback as I wanted to put a proper Garden in it and everything. I had so many ideas but not the ready cash. So hope she can get to do all she can Gardens with Flowers is something very rare here as it is mostly blocks of Flats this is a House for the Weekend and only every so often that is what it was built for and its price to buy is way out of range.

That's great news, I also hope to buy a house someday. It's a shame that the person that was in there previously didn't clean up. I guess some people are just like that. I know she'll enjoy it, especially the rose garden.

houses are the trendsetters today, but i feel condomnium apartments are also really fashionable to go with.i think here you have to change the locks to better way and make it look good with use of better cleansers to make it even more attractive.always maintain the house well like you do always

There are not really any condos available in our town, and both of these young people like their independent space, not so many people so close together. Yes, houses require a lot of maintenance.

Yes, even when my son and his ex were foreclosed on and he could not help as much as he would have liked we stepped in and helped get it done. We could not stand to leave it.

Oh, that was bad advice she received from the realtor! If the house hasn't closed, she doesn't legally have the right to change the locks yet. Hopefully the other person doesn't make a fuss at closing. When my ex and I had had a fight, he kicked me out and then changed the locks! Well, I phoned the police, who were unaware of the lock situation, but I managed to secure a lawyer that made him leave. I was also instructed to NOT change the locks because we were still married and his name was on the paperwork. He only switched the locks on different doors, so after my dad and I figured out where they were, I was able to regain access to my home.

It is kind of a toss up. This woman will not hire a lawyer, but she might have come in on them and taken some of their stuff. Technically she has had no rights to the house since the end of July and has lived there illegally since then. No one wants to prosecute her, she is obviously already on a losing end. Closing is just waiting on a document in snail mail. Maybe not the best choice, but T_______ has to get out of her apartment, and her kids are in school in this neighborhood right now and they are sleeping in another town with her parents.

Her family is very supportive. The house will be in her name, my son's credit is shot. He will help her out, they will not be getting married for a year yet. I may get some pictures of the nicest details, and she has definitely taken some "before" pictures. I think after pictures would be nice to post. The other nice thing is that the school her girls will go to is walking distance and when they get to middle school that one is walking distance as well.
