Six Flags has made a terrible decision...

Six Flags has suddenly announced that it will be closing the Wild Safari portion of Six Flags Great Adventure (in New Jersey) on September 30--FOREVER. Considered the largest drive through safari outside of Africa, Wild Safari has delighted millions of families since it first opened in 1974. It is certainly my family's favorite park of the Six Flags complex, and I have taken my kids there many times without ever going on the nearby rides and roller coasters. Now Six Flags has decided to close it to private vehicles forever, with no explanation. Maybe this is just a money-making scheme by Six Flags to see how much interest there really is in the Wild Safari, but the news has disappointed kids and adults alike, and I truly hope they change their decision. For those of you who have visited or have wanted to visit Six Flags Wild Safari, what do you think of the news? For others have you ever had a tourist spot that has been around since you were a kid just suddenly close without any explanation? I feel like a part of my childhood and my kids' childhood will be gone forever!

I have great pictures of the giraffes licking our front windshield. . .and no, we weren't feeding them! LOL. Six Flags has announced it is closing Wild Safari. . .I hope they reconsider, but I doubt it.

That is too bad. We had a amusement park where we had our family reunions...it had the oldest ferris wheel....(wooden) It did become unsafe and had to be taken down...but it was wonderful to know I actually rode on it. As far as things from my childhood I grew up around Pipestone Minnesota which had a pageant every year called the song of Hawatha....they quit the pageant a few years back and I think that is a shame. It was amazing!

It is sad to lose a piece of your childhood, isn't it? So where do you have your family reunions nowadays?

I hope that's not because the venue closed--that would make it doubly sad!

A long time ago we had one of those... I don't remember exactly where, I suspect in the Arlington area (think Dallas/Ft Worth). I'm sure its gone, we only went once.

We have had a few in NJ over the years, but this one has been around since 1974--and millions still visit it every year, so this is a big surprise, to say the least.

There could be someting behind the closing that should further be found out. I have never heard of the name Six Flags Great Adventure before. It's sad that such a good site should be closed without any explanation.

Great Adventure has been the name of the amusement park since it first opened; it was bought by the Six Flags company several years ago, which owns several parks across the country. But in NJ, most of us still call it Great Adventure.
