I will have to cut costs in food.

After my vacations, I discovered that there were a lot of expenses I hadn`t taken into account, specially some derived from my health problems. So I started to think what costs could I cut and discovered that I could spend a dollar a day in food and yet eat very good meals with proteins, veggies (some from my garden) and a small amount of carbs and fat as the doctor wants me to slim down. Today I made an awesome salad with cooked shredded fish, a small potato, half a carrot, a hard boiled egg and many greens from my garden. The fish is free as I always ask for the heads and spines when I buy fish and boil them for broths and risottos. Today I took whatever was eatable from the cooked fish and it will be better than a canned tuna salad. I froze the broth for a risotto with mussels next week. Do you use your imagination to save on food? Share your ideas. By the way, yesterday I made some orange and carrot jam to eat instead of butter and cheese (a lot more expensive. The jam turned out fine

I eat a lot of beans and rice, of different types. I also have a garden, and chickens-- so fresh eggs every day, and I killed three excess roosters today for the freezer. I also go fishing a few types a week, here in Washington state I get great flounder and dogfish, so I eat fish usually twice a week. It's crab season now, which makes the other half happy, because we have been getting our limit of crabs every day, and it's being frozen for him after cooking (I don't eat them, but I catch them). I also clip coupons, buy only items on sale and cook about 90% of my food from scratch, because the other half is on a very salt restricted diet for high blood pressure. I have baked my own bread for years as well as all my favorite snack foods-- I have a terrible sweet tooth LOL. I am always looking for more ways to cut the food bill, and all my bills, because I just like the challenge of saving money :-). I like to use fish heads to make soup stock too, and I always have some frozen since I like to make poisson cru-- polynesian dish :-). I eat chicken and pork far more than beef, and when I eat meat, it's usually added into a dish, instead of on it's own, so I use less.

Of course I'll accept you, and I'll dig out both of my Polynesian poisson cru recipes-- it is really good if you live right by the beach, because you can do it the way the islanders do, steaming the fish in sea water all day. Basically, you chunk up the fish and simmer in sea water, then flush it out. I usually simmer mine in fish stock, because we get red tide here all summer, of course. Then, when it is almost done, you add coconut milk, grated coconut, onion, some greens and sweet potatoes or yams and finish cooking the veggies. I also will put rice in mine at the beginning so it gets nice and thick. You season it with garlic and a little Cinnamon sometimes, or I also like to season with ginger and cinnamon and a little honey other times. If you grate up the sweet potatoes, it gets really thick too. I get you both my good recipes, and let me know how you like it! I made it island style once, on the beach, and it was great :-)

LOL-- probably. I have several poisson cru recipes I like, but since I am not a fan of raw fish, I always cook mine. One of my buddies loves raw tuna-- so I make it the Tahitian way for him. He was a chef and had never had it-- imagine that.

I am asking you to be my friend. I hope you accept me and you send me that polinesian recipe. We have lots of fish in my country so fish and seafood are part of our lives. I loved your post. I only wish more people could live like you do. I bet we would ba happier.

You really make me wish that I had been able to grow veggies around here. It has been so dry that all the grass is brown and many of the big trees around are dying. I tried cooking a few times and it just hasn't appealed to me like it did before, not that I cared to do it that much before either. I have never had orange and carrots together in a jam but it does sound...interesting...I think it is great that you use the fish heads and spines to save money. Do you get the rest of the fish as well or only those parts? That was a little confusing to me. Have a great week!!!

I know in China they do the same kind of thing. My sister-in-law often cooked up fishheads and I thought it was the strangest thing, but it does make sense...don't waste anything. I think it is mostly a matter of how we are brought up and in America, most people only eat the actual flesh and dispose of the bones and head.

I use the bones of all meat I buy. They are a wonderful source of cheap protein. You can use it for soups or sauces. I use the fish heads and also save the water where I cook seafoood. I can make very good paellas and risottos with that.

Orange and carrot jam - I took that picture while still making it.
I buy the whole fish, usually a very good chilean fish that is quite unexpensive. People usually don´t ask for the heads unless they say it´s for their cats. Many people are afraid to say they eat cheap food, no matter how good. So I ask for the head and spines in another bad. Sometimes I feel daring and I lie that I need to cook for my cat or dog. Then they give me more. It´s a pity, because all that is thrown away. I´m sending a picture of that jam. I took the picture when I sent the recipe to a canadian friend.

I have a tiny garden too that helps cut down on the cost of my groceries. I buy in bulk when possible as my children still need help ever now and again; I spend less and have more to share. I use coupons whenever possible, especially if the item is on sale. I shop in the sale section of my favorite grocery stores. I looke for manager specials. I try to get samples whenever they are available. Leftovers are reused or frozen for later meals. I do all I can to stretch my food budget, it is the most expensive part of my non-bill budget and I'm always looking for ways to lessen it.

We don´t have coupons in my country but I do buy some things when they are on sale, specially red meat. I have become a professional in the use of leftovers, specially since I live alone. I love omelettes so many odds and ends are turned into omelettes the next day. When I have a little leftover rice, I put some lentils to soak as I like thewm with rice. When there´s more, the possibilities are endless. I saw you at one of my sites. Thank you. I hope you have as much luck as I have. Just send me a link when you have one to see if I can repay you.

Bro, it is always to good to have your own garden, you can plant your own green vegetables and eat them at a much cheaper price. For me, the most effective way to save on foods is to eat less and eat at less beautifully decorated food outlets. Haha, when I eat less, I also top gaining fat, that's quite awesome is it.

If you eat veggies, you will not gain too much weight and you will have your full amount of vitamins and minerals. I´m trying to eat less, because one of my doctors wants me to slim down. But I need plenty of proteinas it helps my health.

Nah.. I ever spent my 4 days of vacation by eating in some restaurants - and it costed as much as I usually pay for food for a month! Oh my, I am really regret on what I've done - but it is too late, rite? :D Than I learn to cook at this time by myself, and you know I could cut a half of costs on food for a month. I even ever spent only 5$ for 7 days (I only ate rice - fried egg - and soup) which was so great achievement for being parsimonius . lol Btw, you are so creative to cook some alternative foods. But in here heads and spines of fish costs the same as the full fish. I always cook any kinds of soup - Indonesia has a lot of variant soups , I also cook flavored porridge too called bubur manado . Umm.. I think Indonesia has a lot of spices so you could cook 1 kinds of food by many flavor . It will reduce the costs :D

I have a time share which I use for vacations and get an apartment with a kitchen. I spent a 2 week vacation with a friend last month and we only dined out twice. I cooked and my friend did the dishes and the like. It was very unexpebnsive although we bought some extras we usually don´t buy at home. Rice, fried egg and soup can be very cheap, but my doctors would hate me if I did that. I have cancer and I have to eat more protein than most of the people. I go for eggs though (I love them) but mostly in omelettes. I buy the whole fish and they usually take out the head and throw it away although the amount paid depends on how much it weights with the head. So I ask it.

Sounds like you're very creative when it comes to making good food without spending a lot of money. I wish that I had my own garden but I currently live in an apartment complex so this isn't an option at this point. The most I really do to save money on food is purchase a large quantity of an item when it's on sale and read the weekly flyers to find the deals.

I think that that is a good way of saving too. I do that as much as I can although I live alone. But my savings are more because I cook from scratch and that is very unexpensive comparing to buying the food.

Saving you money for you needs is OK but make sure that you do not sacrifise you good health for money. Remember when health is gone something is gone and in the case of one you can gain it if you work for it.

It's good that you're being so creative with your food yet still eating healthy. We try to pick fruit from public areas (wild berries, that kind of thing) and use coupons wherever possible. Nothing super special.

We don`t have coupons in my country, at least not yet. I`m sure we will have them in the future. But from what I have seen, coupons have more to do with a kind of prepared food that I don`t use.

Dry beans are the best bet around here for saving money. But I can also get a weeks worth of dinners out of a store brought roasted chicken, for under 5.00. This includes the final pot of chicken soup from all the bones and skins. I cool the soup and skim the fat after removing the bones and remaining skin. The skin makes the difference it really adds to the flavor.

Marg, since you have your own garden, i am sure you are able to save quite a lot of money. Try to buy more on condiments and added them into your veggies, i am sure you are able to make many new different types of dishes. Try cut down your meat consumption, since meat usually cost more than veggies. Is fish cheaper in your area? If so, you can eat more fishes for a change. Hope by gathering more new recipes, you are able to plan your expenses as well.

I have lots of condiments, mybf. I even buy some when Igo on vacations to have exotic tastes in some of my dishes. I buy cheap cuts of meat and make my own ground meat. The rest I boil a lot for broth. But I don`t eat a lot of meat of any kind. My father, a biochremist, told me once that our body only needed a very small amount of meat to have all the essential proteins.

I`ll do it. As I always say, I don`t need a lot of money to live like a princess. The "salpicòn" I will eat today is very yummy. It probably will not appeal to everyone here, as some people will not take the meat from the head of a fish, but my country has a lot of coast and we have a life long love story with sea life.

I always cook from scratch and only go to very good restaurants so that I can eat at least as good as in my home. As I don`t have the money to go by myself to those places, my friends invite me to restaurants and I cook for them at home.

I make legumes once a week, although they are not that cheap anymore. Pasta is cheaper here, but my doctor wants to see me in 3 months with 4 kilos less (about 8 pounds). Fortunatly my garden helps. I can make an awesome sout from kale and leeks from my garden. Leeks are too small, but I can steal some of the greens.

yes, i like to buy food separately and make it together so i can save on packages i use to or would buy all at once. i have to work a little harder just to make whatever i'm making to eat but its worth it. let just say i can burn some calories by mixing some food together while at the same time saving money. that's a double whammy. i also like to buy in bulk which saves over time.

hi marguicha it sounds like you have a great plan and with home grown veggies and fish you cannot go wrong. more power to you as I have also heard we can eat well for a dollar a day with some planning .I am stuck here in a retirement center so I eat what they serve or try to as some things I cannot eat as a diabetic

I remember the last time I went with my husband to the US. We went to a mini market and I could not find anything ready to eat with no sugar. He was a diabetic. We had to go on a pilgrimage to a big supermarket to get some food for him. Here, in my country, we don´t have an eating culture with so many sweets as the US. Our usual desserts are plain fruits and cakes or pies are just for birthdays.

I spend about $59.00 a week on groceries. That's only because where I live now there is limited space for food, and we can only cook off of one burner right now. I want to buy more fruits and vegetables but not enough room to store them. The yard needs some work to get it up to fruit and veggie par, or I'd go that route as I had thought of it before. As is, my meals usually only cost around $20.00 to make. If I don't use any meat it's about $7.00.

How many people do you have living with you? It depends on that, of course. I can spend around $1 to $2 a day per person, if I go the cheap way. That includes ome meat, but not a lot.

There is nothing like being a creative cook to save money. I learned that from a fellow worker who would often be cooking up his lunch at work. It involved the use of Top Ramen Noodles. I never knew they could be so useful and the outcome is delicious and cheap. Sorry not into fish but a garden with fresh squash is what I enjoy most.

Day by day the price of each food as well as other commodity is increasing day by day. I just find that most of the expenses are going for the food i and my family members eat. I think it is not easy to but it down. I cannot ask my parents as well as my family members to eat less to cut down the expenses. The only thing i can do is just find somet ways to get extra money. I hope it will satisfy all problems.

I have hears that some people only buy the more expensive cuts in meat even if they hsve money problems. I know how to make very good food with cheap cuts. And I almost never use canned food (I only usr tuna or tomato sauce once in a while) Even my hamburgers are made from scratch.
