I have searched online for writing contests. However when I login I was prompted to pay for membership aside from a ten dollar entry fee. I barely have 5 dollars on my paypal account and I could hardly find writing contests absolute free. I wish I could. Is there such a contest wherein it is absolutely free to participate?

Lot of good sites are available for article writing, some sites conducting contests for good writers and give prizes based on their writing skills. If you are good in article writing, you can make a good income from this kind of article writing contests. Some sites create some fake contests too. We must be very careful about this kind of sites.
Some online sites announcing writing contests, but they require an entry fees to participate in the contest, mostly this kind of sites are scams and don't invest your money with this kind of sites. If a site is capable to pay you for your writing, then it don't require your money for your work. Keep distance from this kind of fake sites. Lot of genuine sites are conducting writing contest, we can make money from this kind of sites by participating in the contest without spending our money.
I am a member in a social site called Mypage5, previously this site conducts article contests and give away a good money for the person whoever wrote the good articles, but now a days we don't find any contest from this site. Hope the admin will conduct a new contest soon. We can believe this kind of sites and join with their contests, as this site is paying around years as well as we are not in need to pay any money for participating in the contest. Join with this kind of good contests to make money and never join with fake sites which require money for participation, you will lose your money with this kind of sites.

I get annoyed with these so-called 'contests' as well. Are you a member on Helium? They have free writing contests every week. Okay, the prizes aren't fantastic, but the articles you write can also earn revenue share from page views, and there are titles with incentive payments as well.
Take a look and see what you think. It's a reputable site as well - I've earned over $5000 since 2007, and you can cash out twice a month as long as there's at least $25 in your account. I'm not looking for a referral here - they don't operate like that - but it seems to be the answer to your question.

I've heard about Helium too, but you have to write longer worded articles than here at mylot. I've also heard of other sites such as Associated Content, Suite 101, Bright Hub and Lifehack. Now that you mentioned about writing sites that have contests I'll have to check these sites out as well. Good luck with the writing!!!!

That's so nice of you providing me with information I am direly in need of. I have submitted a few on triond which earns me less than a cent/ day depending on page view. I may be the poorest writer. sigh!!! By the way my user name on triond is toyota 4k. hu hu hu. and lol.

I have joined writing contest for free before though it is very hard to find. Mostly, i will send my stories online to magazines that are interested in buying them.
