State Bank of India, the largest bank in India is mulling about working on Sundays to improve its efficiency. Good. this will improve the number of people required for working and may increase recruitment in SBI.
Once this comes automatically other banks may also follow suit. But this brings to an end of news Banks may work for 5 days week instead of 5 1/2 days week as it is now.
Whether this change will benefit customers? pl share your views.
Whether you expect your bank to be open on all the days of week?

This is good news really, as our business is getting stalled on week ends due to bank holidays.
However, they have to go a long way. I'm getting reports that different bank people treat them differently. (At one branch of a bank one of my customers was charged Rs.10 for depositing funds into non-branch account whereas in the other branch of the same bank, one person was charged nothing. Shouldn't be there any guideline? The irony is, later when I protested it they simply accepted deposits without any charges.)

Ha..Ha...
You could have saved 50% of it had you personally gone to Vellore by train and given the amount personally.
My branch (SBI) works half-a-day on Sundays and closed on Mondays.

There should not disparity. they should go by rules and regulations only. there are guidelines. in this respect ICICI once charged Rs.181 when I remitted Rs.1000 in chennai for an account in Vellore. atrocious.

you are living in Nagpur -- maharashtra. yes, normally in North India bank employees comes late and leave early(in the 1990s). I think the position may be different now.

I have seen that in 1990's, Punjab National Bank staff used to be very rude, and not at all customer friendly. However, they are much better since last 5 years, and I should say that they are quite comparable to the Private sector bank employees in customer dealings.

I thought that SBI already had Sunday branches which were open even on Sundays. Is this proposal about making all branches open on Sundays? If so then I think yes there would be more private sector employees willing to open accounts with SBI as they will be able to visit their branches during the weekends which are generally off.
Cheers!

hi rav i here in the US the banks are open on Saturday but shorter hours so bank people work six days a week. I liked the idea of being able to go to my bank on a Saturday as I used to work all week. Now I just use the atm machine and also bank on line no extra charges that way,our Bank or America is now charging for so many serices it sort of stinks.,

Hatley aunty,
Yes. a few banks work on saturdays for shorter hours in USA. If the banks work on seven days may be it is convenient. But with ATMs being there people do not feel that banks are closed also because one can access any bank ATM.(India)

I think it would be better if the banks work for 5.5 days, but their customer interaction hours are increased, or someone should be there from 7 to 9 in the evening. Otherwise, the banks-especially state banks would end in dissatisfying their own employees. This is because it is highly unlikely that the wages of the employees asked to work more time would be increased. Also, in the current economic situation an given the state of government, immediate fresh hiring would also be difficult. Another question would be: "How many employees would like to ruin their Sunday holiday ?"

Hi Ravisivan,
Yes really it is benefit to the people, there are lot of holidays per year for banks. To increase the working day for the bank and to serve better to the people and to compete with the private banks. SBI is taking these new steps to work on Sundays also, surely the other banks also follow this soon. Have a nice day.

I am doubtful whether the number of day open for business in a bank is equated as improvement in customer service for the consumers of banking industry's services and goods. I really hope that life can be that simple when a bank open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days in a year also meant that we the cusotmers will have a highly efficient bank ready for us to cash in or out without any online glitch and long wait in line. No theft or bank scam for us customers and no more hassle when dealing with bank in the future, I personally think it still need a lot more efforts on the part of bank to improve its efficiency and more training on their stuffer in order to benefit us the customers, assuming that it is one of their goal to benefit their customers instead of the company CEO.

Provide additional Sunday cashing or other banking services may allow some customers to conduct their banking activity during their off day and making it convenient for them, at the end of the day, it also benefit the bank not just some of their customers since happy customers will want to remain longer with the bank. Whether the bank's customer service will change or not depend pretty much on the interaction of customer with their employees like clerk or teller and the procedure system the bank has in placed to deter fraud and scam. It is not the ultimate objective of every bank to provide services that benefit customers, may be bank in India is different than bank in U.S. Many over here have objective that benefit themselve first and their CEO, not the customers, my friend!! That is what i meant..

While there are a few banks here that are open all seven days of the week, I notice that those banks have very little business on Sundays (they do have some on Saturday, but even the traffic then is not the same as it is from Monday-Friday). I personally think that the idea of banks being open every day of the week is a bad idea. The reason that I feel that way is because of the fact that being open seven days a week would add to increased expenses and that would affect the customers overall because fees and such would have to go up to support the additional overhead of the bank.

Yes. your idea is right for USA-- where computerisation is fully utilised in almost all walks of life. many people operate through internet and a few who want extra ordinary services like issue of managers check etc. visit in person. In fact I went once with my son to a bank and I found it was not crowded and it had staff who were attentive on the needs of customers.
In India of course we use computerisation very little. I do not use it for the fear of the account being hacked. not much of course. thanks for the response.

Yes I think banks should remain open on all days of the week. As far as excessive work burden is concerned, it can be solved by employing more number of professionals as you mentioned. We all are busy on week days and do not actually get so much of time to get it completed in the government offices. A move like that will give us a day at least in which we can get our work done without being worried of our work.

State Bank of India is considered to be the King of all Banks in India. The customer base of SBI is huge. I'm sure, if the bank functions 24/7, it will boast the work performance of the bank tremendously and it will definitely benefit the customers. As a result of this move, other banks also may feel the pressure to take such an initiative. This will help the economy in multiple ways. Employment opportunities will multiply, in this sector.
