Am I losing faith in people?

When I was a child, we played outside, rode our bikes around the neighborhood, pretty much gallivanted around and did what we wanted and my parents were okay with that. Still, they leave their door open during the door and don't usually lock their cars when parked in the driveway. On the other hand, my doors are locked at all times. If you knock on my door and I don't know you, you are not allowed in my house. My car is always locked, even when parked in the driveway. Having children too, it will be a long time before I let them play outside by themselves.
Maybe I'm taking it too far or maybe it's that there are crazy people out there like James Holmes who opened fire in the Colorado movie theatre, or Seung-Hui Cho who was responsible for the Virginia Tech massacre.
Maybe it's that I was there for the Virginia Tech massacre. Luckily, I was safe at home in my apartment but knew that my brother was on campus and was terrified that he could be hurt. He was fine, but as we know there were many others who didn't have such an outcome. How could someone harm so many innocent people?
Maybe it's because a man tried to pick me up in his car. Then later got out of his car and was following me as if he was going to grab me. Luckily, I was able to jump a fence and be home. I am so glad I wasn't naive enough to get in his car and trust me, he was not worried about my well-being.
I know there are lots of good people out there and that people like James Holmes and Seung-Hui Cho are few and far between. Though, as I continue to watch the news and learn more and more what people are capable of I worry about my children. I am not worried about myself, but about them. That somewhere down the road someone is going to try to harm them. The worst part is that once, I did not know any better.
I ask, as we get older and learn the realitieds of life; do we start to lose our faith in people?

yeah these days you can't trust anyone. People are just going crazy. It is true before we also used to keep our doors all open but now can't trust anyone because of the number of crime scenes taking place. I hate to keep the door closed but have no option. even kids on the roads without parents can be attacked is a possibility. You are right, you have to be very careful these days. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.

Today, we should be very careful because there are lots of people that can do harm to us and our family. You are right before we can open our doors or we do not lock our doors but today we cannot do that anymore. We should lock our doors just to keep ourselves and belongings safe. My family and I could not even leave our house because we could not trust anyone anymore.
