I mean, boys that are from toddler age to around 10. Can anybody tell me why they don't have their hair cut anymore? Is it the expense? Don't the schools mind? Years ago (when I was at school) the vast majority of boys had a short back and sides lol. My Dad is in his 70s and the very idea of not having his hair cut on a regular basis at the Barber's would give him palpitations. If it IS expensive for boys to have their hair cut why can't it be done at home? I need this new trend in scruffy hair to be explained to me please.

Perhaps...we can blame it on Justin Bieber? Did I even spell his surname correctly? No disrespect to Bieber fans out here, okay?

LOL. Don't worry, I'm NOT a fan. In fact, he's responsible for a lot of things...poor music becoming the norm being at least one I can think of..for now!

Long hair is just fashionable these days. Come on get with the times! You sound like a mother from the sixties who's kids were growing their hair long like The Beatles! My son has long hair, I would prefer that he shaved it like I do as it was much cheaper when he did that and he was at least able to wash it properly back then! But at least now he looks "cool" and not such a bogan!

I am not sure what you call them in England, but I do know that they exist worldwide under various different names! http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bogan

I think the reasoning behind the grown out hair on boys can either be a financial issue or it could also be the boy beggining his mom not to make him cut his hair because it's a style he wants to have. In my area grown out hair on boys has actually become a common thing, it's part of their style.

I've always had my hair long, even when I was a kid... I remember when I was around 8, my hair being down to my shoulder blades... When I was around 10, my hair came down to my waist... It's not about how much it costs to get a hait cut, I just liked having a long hair... Even now, I have a shoulder length hair... It's some people's preference...

I'm not sure what being a "rocker" has anything to do with people's hair styles... Though I'm not the one to follow any type of trends, I've been to heavy metal & rocket concerts where the singer & few other members of the band had their head shaved or buzzed cut... Short hair wasn't & still isn't really all that in-common in "rocker" group... One, among many, example is Linkin Park... All of the members have their hair short... One has it somewhat bushy but far from "long in the back" as you described it... On a flip side, I've seen kids, as you've already mentioned, with their hairs in the front passed their nose but almost shaved in the back... Either way, long hair is long hair... May be that's the way they like it...

Spelling correction... I meant to say "all that un-common", not "all that in-common"... And not "rocket concerts", I mean to write "rock concerts"...

I understand what you are saying but the kids I saw had hair in their eyes but NOT down their backs. They weren't rockers. I'm a rocker myself and can spot one a mile off. No, to me, the parents have probably given up trying to get their kids to have their hair cut (some of whom were little toddlers) as they cannot be bothered dragging them to the barber's, even for a trim. I'm not on about a skinhead here, just a trim to tidy it up a bit. If they HAD grown their hair long on purpose, fine. But, they didn't have hair down their backs. Imagine being dragged through a hedge backwards and you get the idea.

I know for a fact that it is not expensive to have a boys haircut. It might be the parents are too lazy or the kids fight their parents and do not want a haircut. I remember when I was young, I always had my hair cut. but as I got older I grew it long. And that was the style back in the seventies and eighties. It is also looking to be a trend again now. I see more and more young boys with longer hair. But in the age bracket you're talking about, I do believe the parents should cut their child's hair. And yes they can do it at home with those new hair cutting machines they have.

John's Mum cuts his hair even now with those clippers but that's 'cos John is tight and can't be bothered going to the Barber's. I agree with you. Once the kid says he doesn't want his hair cut, instead of the parent insisting he has it done they give in and don't bother in the end. It looks as though the schools can't be bothered either.

It's not like when we went to school. I went o catholic school and we had to wear a uniform and have short hair. The public schools were not that strict. And today it seems that it does not matter what kind of school you go to.

I don't think they don't have their hair cut as it is expensive.Once a month, how much may they cost? Is it because a celebrity's hair-style is in vogue? However, how come boys who are from toddler age to 10 are all star fans? Aren't they all look like girls? It confuses me.

It confuses me too. My brother always had his ears covered up because they stuck out quite badly and he couldn't have an operation to get them pinned back until he was 13. It affected him a lot at the time as he got called 'Big Ears' and the like. Nowadays the operation is performed at a very young age so the kids don't have to grow up being bullied.

What your brother had done standed to reason, but why did the other kids do so? What is amusing is that over here we call the ears like your brother's protruding ears which means good luck in making money according to what the person who reads fortune says.

How interesting! So, I guess in China he wouldn't need to have the operation on his ears?

i think overall people are letting themselves go as far as overall appearance. its just not the hair but its the cloths as well. it could also be possible that people are really that broke that they can't afford to get their kids hair cut. i mean what are you going to do? put food on the table or get their hair cut. times are tough for people.

Some of the kids I saw (with their parents) looked "well to do" and chose to look like that, in my opinion. They certainly wore decent waterproof jackets in the pouring rain..which don't come cheap.

Some boys don't want short hair, and sometimes the parents don't want them to have short hair, and sometimes it's both. It really depends whether it looks intentionally long, as in they have a style, or whether it's just scruffy and LOOKS ungroomed. There is a difference. If I had a little boy and his hair was curly, I probably would keep it longer vs a buzz cut, or if he wanted it all one length say past the bottom of his ears, I'd be okay with that too. I don't like the inbetween 'shaggy' type of style but if you're growing out hair, that's kind of unavoidable for awhile. I don't think the schools have the right to 'mind' unless they are private or the child has hygiene issues related to shaggy hair. I know that sounds kind of strange but private schools can enforce things that most public schools do not. I'm actually glad, I use the public school system and I don't want other people telling me HOW I need to cut or style my child's hair. I have a little girl and at least I DO her hair, unlike some people. I think if people are going to complain about hair, I have some gripes too. I don't think people should send ANY child to school without having their child at least BRUSH or COMB their hair or doing it for them. Kids have no business being in public looking like they haven't showered in a week or wearing clothing that looks like it hasn't been washed in a week. I think dress codes should include these things as violations rather than focusing on certain types of clothing or colors.

Thanks for that. Judging by what I observed yesterday in the rain, it was obvious which kid had it styled long and the ones who couldn't be bothered having it cut. Unfortunately, the latter were in the majority but I guess everyone looked a mess once the Town Centre resembled a monsoon.

I think it's fashion, honestly. I remember being in school at that age and let me tell you, the boys with the longer hair got a LOT of attention from girls! When my husband was young, his father always had to get on his back to cut his hair...but by the time he was in his teens and early twenties, he let it grow out like he wanted it, and I'm so glad he did. Longer hair is absolutely beautiful on my husband...it gets to the point that he has to cut it for work and I get pretty upset. Like any haircut, I really think it depends on the person, too. Many boys look funny with short hair. My little cousin was one of them. Something about his facial structure didn't quite fit with short hair. He grew out the hair, got a little confidence and quite a few girls to flock behind him, and then cut it again in his later teens. My grandmother's happy with the short hair on him, but I just don't think it looks right. Some boys just look better with long hair!

I actually agree with you. It was the much younger boys I had a beef with. When I was in my late teens I wouldn't actually go out with a guy unless he had long hair. I had a thing about it, me being a rocker and all that. However, I think unkempt hair that's neither here nor there (inbetween cuts I suppose you would call it) looks naff on a lad before his teenage years, but there again they're off school during the summer holidays so I'm hoping some of them will get it cut before they go back..or at least trimmed!

I don't understand it either! I grew up with crew cut, and I even went to a school which required us to have our hairs cut short. Even after a rebellious period where I grew my hair long after I got out of that school, I still went back to having it short. My kids always get their haircut every 3 or 4 weeks. It's a bit expensive, but I'd rather spend that (I tried cutting them at home with disastrous results), than have them runnign around in scruffy hair.

Some posters think I'm on about the kids wanting to grow their hair "for the look" but I'm not. I'm on about kids (some of whom were little toddlers) who - obviously, have NEVER had their hair cut. That's different from growing hair on purpose down the back (as in guys who follow heavy rock music) as the hair is all over the place with no definite style.

I think it's about fashion. I remember my son has a very nice hair when he was in his elementary years. We seldom cut his hair during those times, but when he went to high school, the school is implementing a rule on the student's hair cut so we have to follow. Now my son is already in college and he got used to the hair style already.

I think it is the responsibility of parents to have their hair cut and kept neat because 10 years old kid is a minor. Maybe the parents like it that way but for me, school should be very professional and short neatly cut hair. If I was the principal, I would not allow shaggy hair in school. Have a wonderful day ahead.

It's not so bad if the hair is styled in some way. Then it doesn't look as though it's just grown out of hand and not been cut at all (or combed) but I wouldn't want them all to have mega short hair either, if it's something the kids get upset about.

Maybe because they love long hair. And they feel that they will look more handsome if they had a long hair..lol
