Computer Problems

I had some computer problems this morning that appear to be gone now. I was watch a streaming sports event, U. S. Open Tennis match, when my computer got really, really slow. So I closed everything and restarted it and went back to trying to watch the match. Then suddenly the monitor went black as in sleep mode but unlike sleep mode moving the mouse did not bring it back. Finally after a few minutes it came back on but with a blue screen with a message that started with something like Windows encountered a problem ... if this is the first time you are seeing this, then it went black again before I had time to read the full page. Then it came back on with the screen that offers the choice of letting the computer windows start normally or in safe mode. I chose normal and it went trough the blue screen that disappeared quickly and then the mode choice mode screen came up. This time I chose safe mode and got the desktop but with all the icons larger etc. I went on IE and tried to watch the match but the video window was too big for the screen and there was no audio, which may be what happens in safe mode or not; so I gave up because I had some things to do and shut down the computer. So this afternoon I turned it on and after the message that Windows did not shutdown normally but was recovered, everything seems to be working fine. It was a scare though, since I was envisioning having to take the computer somewhere to have it fixed and being without it for several days. I just hope it doesn't happen again. And now I am worried if something about watching the streaming video caused it. I really want to watch some more of the tennis.

The wonderful world of computers. My computer has bouts of working well with bouts of what is wrong now, the past week was a what is wrong now week. The thing is there is nothing like a reboot it seems to cure a lot of simple errors computers have, your computer seems to have had problems either with the buffer which caused the computer to crash or something wrong with one to the sectors, that means the reboot will identify the errors in the buffer or sector and go around it. This happens a lot when computers are working heavily for a while and streaming a tennis match may have done that, but maybe not. If it continues to happen a virus/malware scan could at least remove that possibility. The cleaning out of your history, de-fragmentation of the drive or just checking for something that is not working correctly, could be a program that has been corrupted, all can cause the effects you mention. If all this fails and the computer does not recover well the best is a technician to see if it something more serious. Good luck.

That is good, since it is not a virus, and it has not happened again, hopefully it was just a buffer overrun which happens every now and again, that is a temporarily error which will auto-correct with a reboot. And since you are careful with your history hopefully it was just a one off.

My anti-virus program runs a scan periodically; at least once a day. I clear the history every time I go from one web page to another unrelated page.

I have strong suspicions that the live streaming might have caused it to go berserk. But I think that when you turned it off for a while the bug got fixed by it already that is why when you turned in on again everything seems to ba back to normal again.

I was suspicious of the live streaming. It was the first time I have done it from that website; I have never had a problem with it from other websites however.

Your computer might have caught a virus. If there is unusual blinking or sudden shut down of your machine, you ought to have it reformatted.

Hi, So, you are having Internet Explorer for a browser. I seem to have the same problem here, IE kept on loading without my permission. I tried to uninstall it via the Add/Remove Programs in control panel still the problem persists. I suspect something is wrong with IE, it is a built-in browser for MS-DOS. I have been using Firefox since I began my online activities years ago. IE seem to be slower and has lots of issues, in my experience. Try your antivirus too, maybe something is trying to toy with your browser, or else try another browser like firefox or chrome. If the symptoms persist, its time to reformat the drive, as what I am planning now.

It is fine now. It wasn't an IE problem. It was the computer and Windows 7. I use Firefox here but IE most other places and usually have no speed problem with IE.
