Ridiculous...

There was a news story about a boy who is deaf signing his name. The school he goes to says when he signs it looks like a weapon... Three-and-a-half year old Hunter Spanjer, who is deaf, signs his name by crossing his forefinger and index finger and moving his hand up and down. The district claims that it violates a rule that forbids anything in the school that looks like a weapon. The school wants his parents to change his sign language name. How ridiculous is this??? It's on yahoo news if you want to check it out... Your thoughts?

Oh gosh, This is evil of the school system, they should be glad that the boy can write something. If they can't teach the boy themselves being teachers. They are rubbish teachers and the school system has nothing better to do. I guess that is why many people choose to home school their children these days. I hate the school system as to what it is turning out to be. It is ridiculous. Have a wonderful day ahead.

What a crock. I think they are getting way too carried away with this kind of crap...there is always someone out there that has to bring something like this to light and how ridculous is this anyway? Sign language has been around for a long time....maybe they should change their attitudes!

It is so stupid. They are focusing on this type of stuff instead of actually doing their job and TEACHING!! It is ridiculous. I feel bad for Hunter! I feel bad for his parents too, if I was them I would be FURIOUS!

"The school wants his parents to change his sign language name." Ummm... are these people stupid enough to think that sign language is just a made-up language that allows deaf people to use any signs they want for things? It's a language with conventions just like any spoken one, except it is conveyed with the hands! Next thing you know, they are going to tell the parents to change the English language, as well, to remove his name - Hunter - because "a hunter would carry a weapon." I just shake my head and wonder how much lower people can go.

I absolutely agree with you, it is the most ridiculous thing I have seen! The poor boy, and his poor parents. I feel for them. I would not be sending my child to school after all of this was going on. No teacher or anyone else would be telling me to change my child's name! Who the heck do you think you are telling me to change MY child's name?? They think they have all the power in the world and they can do whatever they want to students and parents. Sickening!

Yeah it is so stupid! They are ridiculous for this kind of stuff. Why not focus on teaching and things like that instead of bugging an innocent child about how he signs his name?

One word I have and I hope the parents have, "discrimination" That is totally stupid and I seriously hope the parents fight this to the very end!!! My favorite aunt was deaf, just because the language is different, doesn't mean it shouldn't be allowed..What if in someones language the word, "help" sounds like "kill" or "bomb" or something? Knowing the language will prevent this kind of stupid move..

It is stupid and I believe the parents are fighting it, seems like it from the news story about this. I hope they do. It's a deaf school that he goes to so I would think they could look up the meaning and drop the whole thing... Stupid people I swear.

Give some people a bit of power and see where it goes...how much lower can they get? I know one thing, I would take that little boy out of that school and place him somewhere else or home school. If they win the case, this poor little kid will be picked on all the time for anything that they feel he does wrong. Some of these so-called college educated adults that make these decisions need a good slap upside the head and get fired from their jobs. Give these jobs to people who are compassionate and understanding.

This is one of the saddest stories that I've heard in a long time. And I believe that these parents should honestly go after the school system for discrimination because that is exactly what their son is going through. I know that all children should be allowed to have a free education because of the fact that our tax dollars do help to pay for our children's education. However, I believe that if I was the one that was in a situation like this, I would either consider another school district or consider private school for my son. This reminds me somewhat of a little boy here whose HOA wanted the family to remove their therapy playhouse they had built for their son because it was a violation of their HOA rules (the playhouse was considered to be a permanent structure). His family fought this tooth and nail and the little boy is going to be allowed to keep his house.

It is truly sad. If I was the parents I would be going nuts on the school!! I would not let them get away with treating my son that way. It is not fair and there are TONS of more important issues going on in schools now a days. This is so ridiculous to me. I would personally Home School if it was me, that is what I am doing already. Lol. I would not have to worry about stupid schools and the things that go on in them!

My thoughts are that the school is being ridiculous and the parents should tell them so. Earlier I watched the Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony (which was awesome) but silly Channel 4 didn't show the signer next to a singer that was on..kept messing about with the camera work. Needless to say, deaf people weren't happy about it and have complained to Channel 4, quite rightly so. What's the point of a signer being on if you can't read what she's saying?

Let us know what happens as I feel the parents have a good case. If it was me I wouldn't rest until justice was served. I feel so sorry for the child and his parents in this, I really do.

I think the school is so stupid for this and I believe the parents are fighting it! I don't blame them either for complaining! Your right what is the point if they cannot see it?

Totally ridiculous! It's really disappointing how adults could put meanings into the innocence of a child. It's actually the adults who pollute their minds.

Yeah I agree. It is ridiculous, this little boy has no idea about any weapons it looks like when he is signing, to him it is his name!
29 Aug 12
I actually hope the child is sheltered from it because it could give him a complex and make him worry about how he's perceived by others when he's just trying to tell others his name, like he doesn't have enough to worry about in this ignorant world we live in. Poor thing

Now I have heard everything. They are taking this political correctness way too far. Sign language is sign language. Leave the kid alone. I think the parents should complain, not give in.

Yeah it is so stupid! I think they should leave the kid alone as well. There are far better things for the school to be worried about rather than a child's name!!!

Hi friend, sad to hear about the deaf boy, i wonder how a sign violate the rule? as you mentioned his sign is like a weapon, i wonder how is it possible? do you have his sign copy picture?

Probably because a Hunter is someone that shoots and kills animals usually so it probably looks like a bow and arrow I am guessing. I saw it on yahoo news online...
29 Aug 12
Bonkers! If they are strictly sticking to the letter of 'the law' then should that not mean that all rulers, compasses, board dusters and and similarly potentially harmful objects be removed from the school with immediate effect? I can think of a sign I'd like to give the school using two fingers, although in the U.S. I believe it's just the one!

Oh I agree, it is so stupid and your right many things in a classroom can be used as weapons so they should get rid of all of that stuff then! Good point.

I had not heard this. I am wondering how they came up with the sign they use for his name? Since "Hunter" is a legitimate word, if he uses the sign for "hunter" they should not be against it.I do not have my book handy or I would look it up. In the variety of sign that I worked with the described position of his hand is the same as the "er" ending on any word. That would be like a school saying that a child named "hunter" could not say his name out loud. Crazy. We have all kinds of spoken names and nicknames, this is not right.

In the article it said they were following a certain sign language for his name. I cannot remember what it was. I agree they should not be against it. I find it to be quite ridiculous! They should be focusing on more important things!

That is so ridiculous! Now the schools are targeting a deaf child becauase he the way he signs his name! Schools are being so stupid! Everything seems to be a violation of something! Instead of the schools improving they are going down hill! Not to mention so many programs are being dropped because the schools have the funding! It is crazy!

I didn't say horrible, I said ridiculous which is what it is... Murder is much worse! Another reason my children will be home schooled, there is way too much violence in school these days.
