How do you imagine life without the internet?

I am so glad that the internet is invented. Because of it I was able to work online and in the comfort of my home in the past 7 or 8 years now without a boss. I also find a lot of interesting sites to entertain myself like youtube videos, facebook and some online games too. You got the world in your hands whenever you go online.
What if the internet is never invented, how would you imagine your life to be? How would it be different, and what activities would you be doing instead?

Internet has been a lot of help to most of us. Imagine a world that will communicate thru letters which really takes a lot of time before you received the messages. Furthermore, internet give opportunity to some people that just stays at home to work online and have some passive income.

An interesting point which is very applicable to me who is into passive income business online. Anyway, I would guess if there is no internet and you can't work online at home, then most people would go back to their day jobs. In my case, because I love freedom from having a boss I would go with freelance and probably sell realty properties or buying and selling of stuffs, or network marketing or multi-level marketing, or using my talents in sports to earn some income like tennis and chess tutoring. I could be making a lot more song compositions and submit them in recording studios and artists, and other things.

Yes, a long time ago I used to work in the field as a medical representative, real estate agent and other selling jobs. It has been an exciting and learning experience but there are a lot of difficult moments as well. I would say I would still not replace any types of jobs to what I am doing now working at home in my computer :)

Oh, life would still be worth living. However, a lot of tasks and activities will take longer time to accomplish and would have so much delays. If there was no internet, perhaps, I would be more focused on nurturing my kids. I would be watching DVDs with them whole afternoon, and play with them more. That would be the good thing about not having internet.

I think a lot of moms and dads tries to work online in their own home so that they could have more time with their children. I can imagine myself very satisfied the moment I have my own children because just like you, I can spend some time with them :)

I agree, and I have read a few articles about it online which says that we need to let our loved ones know that even if we are working at home, we still need some time for our work online where we won't be distracted. We need to give a schedule at home where everyone would read "Don't Disturb" in our door. Then on the other times we could enjoy our family :D

It is good to have time with your family or kids. However, if you get a full time online job, you still have to isolate yourself from the kids who could be distracting you from your work. It's still work, and needs your focus and demands of your time. That's why I haven't gotten a full time online job yet, because I still need to be with my baby.

The internet is a good tool and very useful for many things, it is entertaining, fun and educational. It can take you all over the world in the comfort of your home and is a means of making money. However it also a means of a lot of bad things, spam, scams, phishing, false information, misleading things, and many other things that can be down right gross or evil.
Can I live with out it yes. I often go days and am not on it and other times I am on it every day for several hours, with in between breaks of doing other things. I have no problem living without it. I would read and am an avid reader even now and read 2-3 hours a day. I also write stories and the internet is a means of publishing them or finding publishers and I might not find it as easy to publish off line but it can be done.
I play games and they are fun and entertaining but I could play board games, do crossword puzzles and watch t.v or other things like color which I like to do. I can write letters and do scrapbooking instead of email. I would probably get out and do more photography. So I would find other avenues of interest that would fill in my time and hours and I have family that I spend a lot of time with and would spend more time with. I would swim and walk more. I would do more gardening, baking and go fishing.
So yes I would be fine without it and could live without out it but I do enjoy the things it offers as well. It should be used as a tool. Too many people use it wrongly and get addicted to games or other things that are not wholesome or healthy. Like anything it takes wisdom, self control and balance.

Wow, you're probably the first one here who seem not to be bothered at all if ever there won't be any internet available. I admire you for that, because that means you have a lot of other things you could do and you're not controlled by the internet. I think when someone say I can't live without the internet, it simply means my life is much better with the internet but they don't really mean they can't live without them. If ever the internet does disappear from the face of the earth, these same people would surely find ways to adjust and find other meaningful activities to replace the use of the internet.

Hi there Celanith! :) I guess you're truly a creative soul and a writer at heart who can occupy her time and make sure she's both productive and can create beautiful things even without the Internet. :) I was reading through the posts on this thread and yours really both struck a chord and resonated with me. :)
I wish I could honestly say that I can be like you when unplugged, but I have my doubts, since I've always been a techie girl, since I was a kid.
However, I can honestly enjoy a few hours of solitude in nature. Whether it would be admiring a beautiful view as such that I can find in Boracay Island, a tourist spot here in my country, or whether it's catching the sunset just from where I live, beholding beauty comes naturally, as we humans are wired for it.
But at the end of a 6 or 12-hour run without being online, I would certainly feel the NEED to share about what I've beheld, especially on Facebook. xD

Awesome discussion by the way, BetterDays4Me. :) It's an interesting topic, and I like that it brought out beautiful thoughts like those from Celanith. :) Even your responses to the people here were good to read on. :)
Thanks for this!

The internet is something I do not NEED as much now, but I WANT it. There was a time I had limited access to things, and the internet hepled. My life would be somewhat limited without it because the internet is helping me to open my mind to some things. The access to information is life changing and I cannot deny that. Without the internet, I would be less likely to be educated on some very important things.

Yes, the internet is really great and you got the Universe in your hands when you're online. So may I ask what you could be doing if there is no internet?

You seem like a passionate dancer. Listening to music is surely one of those most popular hobbies anyone loves and I for one is an avid music lover. I also love dancing like you and used to be a member of an all male dance group on tv back in the 80's...so this statement only shows more or less how old I am. LOL

I would probably allow my brain to disintegrate from watching too much bad televison because I am not aware of how to do more with my spare time. I would do something more physical like listen to music and dance all day long, and I mean ALL DAY LONG. This would take time away from the discovery of other potential I would have. I like having this virtual library (computer) give me options.

Having lived for more than sixty years i been around during a time when there were no computers. I worked at jobs that were partially computerized. I was with at&T when they went through the devestiture. I remember when I first ventured online and traveled to Ireland and Bermuda for the first and probably only time. My life would be very boring if I didn't have the internet to go to daily.

Yes, I think one of the most common effect of having no internet is to have less excitement in life which we experience whenever we are online. But I'm sure there are a lot of good substitutes for the internet if ever it becomes unavailable. Probably one is focussing on your relationships, and for those who are single like me, giving more time to look for my girlfriend and giving more time with her would be something that could replace time on the computer. Romance is such a wonderful feeling that makes life worth living...like the computer.

Well, I have already experience life with internet so I think it would be boring if ever there's no internet. But still, there are more physical activities that a person could do even without it. I think it would be better for us if we don't have internet. Why? Because we could engage ourselves more into sports and other physical activities.

I agree, and I bet people would be healthier and fitter without them. I think it would be a great thing if we who are computer users still finds good ways to have regular exercise and stay fit and slim. I'm sure many do, but in my case it's still a goal for now.

Yes, I feel for you nenyalorien. I also see my computer and internet as a kind of life saver...saving me from the uncomfortable situation in the office where I needed to please a boss and have to face office politics. Don't get me wrong, I do have my enjoyable times with my colleagues but you can't escape some people who would cause you some trouble, some intrigues and back biting which makes the overall experience an uncomfortable one ( at least in my own experience ). I'm now happy to have been working at home in the past 7 or 8 years having no boss but being my own boss and dictating my time. I love working in my shorts and resting whenever I wanted to :)

Hi Betterdays4me,
I will be mad for some days if the net was worked, now itself we feel discomfort when the internet is off any time. We cannot imagine our life without internet, everything is linked with internet chatting, sending mails, money transfers, messages, photos ,movies etc etc. Total work will be stopped in the world without net, have a nice day.

Hello yugasini, yes I feel the same way because most of my days are spent in front of the computer. My livelihood is actually dependent on having the internet working for me, so I really feel very uneasy out when there is some internet problems or computer trouble.

I was in my early 20's when I used the internet for the first time. Before that time I spent my time on other activities. One of my main hobbies was reading, I borrowed a lot of books at the library and I spent hours reading novels, short stories and non-fiction books about the topics that I was interested in. I also had another hobby at that time. I had a lot of snail mail penfriends from around the world and I spent a lot of time writing letters to them. We exchanged pictures, postcards, souvenirs and a lot of other things and I really enjoyed corresponding with them and learning about their countries. If the internet had never been invented I think that I would still spend a lot of free time on those two hobbies.

Wow, good for you that you've actually managed to have pen-friends, Porcospino. :) My elder cousins, aunts and uncles have encouraged me to have them but I was too hyper in my teens to actually get on to making snail-mail friends. xD However, when I did get online, I found myself making friends with people all over the world. Most of them, I've forgotten by now. xD
@BetterDays4Me (3777)

Yes, what's interesting with penfriends is that they write you with their own penmanship which somehow has some different effect when someone wrote to you in typewritten letters as we can see more about the person's personality in the way he writes. Then we could receive their real pictures and not just uploaded pictures of them on the internet. On the other hand, the good thing about having friends online is that you could have a lot more friends worldwide in a short period of time.
If you want a personal touch, then having pen-friends would be the thing.

If there isn't internet now, I guess I'm not work in this city now. We are using internet everyday. Without internet, we can't do our job. It's useless to go to the workplace. Internet gives us a lot of benefits. Before we only gather information. Then, we use it for social networking, instant messaging, video calling, buy and selling or shopping online, etc. Without internet, our life would be incomplete now. LOL. Sadly, no myLot. Happy mylotting.

Oh yes, there won't be mylot and we can't be able to share opinions, knowledge, experience and even pictures. Mylot has been such a good free site and for me, it is the best place for beginners to start earning online.
Concerning having no internet, I guess I would go into freelance or have some kind of business on my own, but never again an employee.

A pleasant day BetterDays4Me,
With reference to your post, if the internet did not arise, then there might be another way on how to work virtually. Or perhaps, it will be similar to internet but on a different term. And whatever it may be called, people will surely adopt it and be used to the flow.
On my part here, well, I can never explain how it will be if the internet was not invented. I will just cross the bridge when I get there.

Don't worry airasheila, that will never happen. I remember when the internet was first invented and introduced in my country, it was so darn slow it's not worth using...lol. This is really the time of technology. Come to think of it, it might be the sign of the end of the...old fashioned ways. What were you expecting me to say?

I read somewhere before that in a certain age range which I forgot ( I think from 25-50 years old or close to it ) that the most number of millionaires from these age bracket are from those working online. That seems really inspiring and encouraging. More and more people I believe is going into the internet to replace their old jobs. The internet would be the next generation work place of people seeking earning opportunities.

and I guess there are a lot of people whose past hobbies are replaced by time on the internet...I'm one of them and I do have a lot of hobbies before like playing different sports, playing the guitar and piano, and my book reading lately have diminished a lot. These could be some of the downsides of too much internet usage.

Without internet life is so dull and boreing . We can not socialize , we can not discuss or chat . Throw internet we can connect with any one at any place and any time . We get day to day updates about what is going around the works . We can listen music and switch movies. We get everything which we want on internet ,it gives the solution to every problem.

Hi Better, indeed internet is very important in our life. Nowadays, i spend my time everyday for a few hours in front of my computer. Besides getting the chance to earn some income through online, i got the opportunity to read a lot of new and interesting story online. If a day without the internet, i think i would have to buy story books on my own. And i have to spend money buying newspapers as well. Now, i don't have too, since i can always read them through online.

Damn, i really can't imagine how's life gonna be for me or other people without the internet, especially for those whose work and life relies on it. Personally i consider myself as a computer addict who is always on my desk in front of the computer and surfing the net. And the internet used to be my buddy and my stress reliever. It makes me connect with my friends and my family, learn new things, watch the news, play games, makes some work easier, and all other stuffs which is of my interest. It makes my time worthwhile and kinda get the boredom away from me.
