Is it really better to give than to receive?

Just a simple thought that popped out my mind this evening while I'm waiting for my girlfriend. I've been hearing from this quote since my childhood and sometimes it really makes me think, is it applicable at all times? Can this be ironic sometime? Sarcastic in any way? Well, ofcourse we would love to give to those who are in need :)
What do you think?

If there's none, then why is your emoticon like that? hahaha.. Well, it's good to hear you're in good terms with him.

Just so you know, I asked a generic question. It doesn't pertain solely on my girlfriend, though I must say it can be applied :). Anyhow, thank you for a great feedback! I think it's about time that you get the job done in terms of your boyfie ^_^ lol.

I think this can also be seen as it is better that you are in the position that is well able to be a giver than the one who needs to receive. It teaches us how to be generous. But of course for every rule, there's always an exception. If we are to give help to those who need, we also have to keep in mind if the help that we will be giving them is something that will indeed benefit them. We might have the most pure of intentions but if this isn't what they really need, then we are doing more harm than good. For example, in giving alms to the homeless. By giving some change to a particular homeless person, we might think that we are doing him some good. When in fact, he will just go and use the money to buy solvent and sniff it. (of course, this is not always the case, just an example for the sake of conversation).

You really have a point. Your opinion is really what I'm talking about. Thank you and have a great day ahead!

Yes, I believe in that quote simply because if you are able to give that means you are blessed and is fully capable. If you're the one receiving that simply means you are lacking. I don't think this quote is just telling us to give way to others for us to be blessed but the other way around. We give because we have. And just be thankful that you have something to give to others. :)

when the word ''better'' is written on any quote or slogan i notice that many people tend to just agree with it, ''it is better to give than to receive'' seem to be one of the common quote that i often hear and also easily believed it,but now in my opinion giving is no better than receiving it always depend upon the situation of the giver or the receiver,.. ''it is better to give than to receive'' ask of me now, is like saying ''red is better than blue
