Working on my treadmill makes my legs cramp.

I'm finding it really hard to do the treadmill. I'm okay with it before but now I can't seem to even make it to 10 minutes. A couple of years ago, my legs cramp every now and then. I think it's whenever I stretch sometimes or stand on tip toes, like when reaching for something high. I'm not really sure if the problem are my legs or I'm just doing it the wrong way. I tried to do interval training on the treadmill. Interval training is where you switch speeds with same duration (ex. walk briskly for 2 minutes then run for 2 minutes, then back to brisk walking for 2 minutes. can also be done on the stationery bike). I can easily do the bike but not the treadmill. It makes my legs cramp like hell! I don't know what my problem is, since I was okay with it before. My dad said I probably lack potassium and that makes my legs cramp easily. I've put on a lot of weight. Is it because my problem with my legs? Am I doing it wrong? Or Is it normal for someone who put on a lot of weight and haven't had exercise for a very long time? Can anyone please help me? Tips/techniques would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Sophiaraine, the muscles are different for running, and cycling are different groups. You can try some warm up to loosen your muscles so that they do not cramp and cause pain easily. Alternatively, you can rub ointment on your legs before you exercise. it will improve blood circulation and reduces the possibility of leg cramps.

Hi Scheng, thanks for the response.I've actually thought about that before, warming up before doing the actual workout. I really don't warm up before working out so I thought it might be the problem and it's really necessary. I haven't tried it yet because my house is on renovation. There are dusts and cements everywhere so I can't workout. I only workout at home. What kind of ointment are you talking about? Is it like ointments for muscle pains? Do they really work? I'm glad you could give a little advice. Thank you very much! :)

If you find it difficult to walk on the treadmill try a stationary bicycle. On a bicycle the weight on your legs will be less and so you will be able to exercise yourself for a long period of time.

Thank you for that but unfortunately, I'm aware of that. I'm pretty sure I said I'm okay with the bike but I'd like some help/tips/advice on doing the treadmill.

First of all, you may want to consult with your doctor about this. You may also want to try using an elliptical machine. Treadmills and stationary bikes can be pretty rough on the joints but an elliptical is very low impact and can actually help you burn more calories than a treadmill. I recently purchased one and love it. If you're that serious about losing weight you may also want to consider joining a gym and signing up with a personal trainer who can create specific workouts geared towards your abilities and what goals you want to accomplish. Good luck!
