Hello guys....howdy Nowadays I am not getting enough time for mylo ting. Its feels so nice to be back. Happy Onam!! I like reading a lot especially if its fantasy,While reading those kind of work, we automatically get drawn into that world while reading I never get the feeling of actually reading it. But when it comes to academic topics, i barely able to concentrate. So many distractions.phoooo I can only read as fast as I can speak, this is because while reading I am sub vocalizing every word.Being a very slow speaker, my reading speed is very low, about 100 wpm. In my younger days I used to read it out loud. Now I seldom read it that loud, but that bad reading habit that I had earned is still haunting me. Now here is how I actually read things. When I read it in my mind, a gentle voice iterating every word. This inner voice is a big distraction.I can't comprehend anything that I read. After reading I can't even recall 20% of the content. So I go back to read it again and again, just to fill those gaps. This slows me down even more. How to eliminate this annoying voice,... Any tip ? Anybody? Any speed reader here? please comment....tips, suggestions etc will be greatly, appreciated...

When you first learned to read, were you taught the phonetic system or did you memorize whole words? How to eliminate the vocalization depends on knowing this, I think.

Ah, then it will be easy for you to increase your speed, and fortunately there are many websites with free tips. One of my favorites is here: http://www.readingsoft.com/ Normally I read well over 1000 words per minute, but the first time I took the above site's speed and comprehension test, I slowed down to what I thought was about half my normal speed to be sure of being able to pass the comprehension test. My results were a speed of 524 wpm and I did get 100% right on the comprehension. I actually took several speed reading courses many years ago, starting out at 600 wpm as I was already an avid reader before. I also took a wonderful course in comprehension called SQ3R, which is now summarized online and I would recommend that method to anyone. All of my college grades went up a full letter immediately after studying SQ3R and using it to help me learn to read faster and better. One of the things I did on my own to get my speed up was rather enjoyable, and that was reading children's books. They are excellent for practice because when learning to increase reading speed, we do not like to encounter unknown words. An important technique that was emphasized in the courses was to practice comprehending words in a group or phrase instead of seeing individual words. I did this by sliding a blank 3 x 5 note card along the line of text, but now there are some programs online such as spreeder.com that offer drills. Nobody wants to read faster without good comprehension, so good programs emphasize surveying the material first and reading with questions in mind for which you are reading to seek answers. It is surprising how many people begin reading something without a defined purpose! It is important to take a little break frequently when speed reading, and each break is a good time to think back about the importance of what was read and whether the questions you brought to the material were answered. Improving reading skills, I think, is one of the best things you can do to take control of you life and improve your circumstances. I highly commend you for taking a greater interest in reading well than most people do.

I wish that there was some way that I can help you with the issues that you have with reading, but I really can't because when I am reading and when I am writing as well, I hear the voice in my head as well. With that said, I have personally found that when I am trying to block out the voices in my mind, then I am able to understand even less than I am able to understand when I let those voices do their thing.

Only 1% of the population know speed reading.I got this idea from youtube. One suggestion was to chew gum while reading.I had little success with this strategy. But its too early to arrive at any conclusion.

I deeply regret learningto speed read. What would take someone else many hours to read I can read in a couple of hours. Good thing we have a library here or I would always be in debt for books.
