I have a dvd with some scratches on, it won't run in dvd player or a disc drive. I tried to make a copy of it with "Nero start smart" but didn't succeed. Is there any software available for this purpose ? It would be nice if it is a freeware.

Software is probably not going to be much use if the DVD drive can't read the data. You will probably need to use a DVD repair kit which contains solutions for cleaning the disk and filling in (or minimising) the scratches with a liquid which has the same optical properties as the disk when it dries. These are expensive and probably not worth it for one DVD (when you might often buy a replacement much cheaper). Repair is quite a tricky process and not always successful, depending on the depth of the scratches. If they are very shallow surface damage, you can sometimes polish them out enough to make the disc readable by using a VERY fine abrasive (such as toothpaste or a Fuller's earth based metal polish). I have heard of people repairing CDs and DVDs with a suitably diluted clear nail varnish followed by careful polishing. This search shows a number of instruction sites on repairing DVDs: http://search.mylot.com/search.aspx?t=web&k=I+have+a+dvd+with+some+scratches+on

Why repair when you can copy it directly to the drive??then you can transfer it to another blank dvd...

If the DVD is so damaged that it cannot be played, it is VERY unlikely that any software solution will be able to restore the data to a playable condition, however low level the copying process is. Since the software is free, it certainly does no harm in trying, but I am 90% confident that it will NOT work!

I would like to first try software option and if it doesn't work at all then would try the DVD repair kit. As you have mentioned that it is of high cost so I am unlikely going to use it.
