The dog I never had

I remember, when I was in college, my friends and I visited PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center. For those who aren't familiar with it, PAWS is the Philippine counterpart for PETA. One of the staffs toured us around. I saw a lonely white dog (I don't know the breed) sitting on the corner. We approached him and played with him. He was about nine years old, according to the staff. When his owner moved to a different apartment, he left him at the center because pets weren't allowed in his new home. He had been sad since he got separated from his person. His eyes lit up when he saw us. He wagged his tail and looked very happy. The staff told us that he had rarely seen him like that. I hugged him and wanted to adopt him so bad, but I couldn't because money was tight and I knew that I couldn't afford to have him. He was very old, his fur was already falling off. When it was time to leave, I looked at him one last time and silently said goodbye to him. I knew that I'd never see him again. Someday, I'm going back to the center, adopt a poor dog, and provide him the best home possible.

Aww how sad for that poor dog. I hope he was not put to sleep. Im guessing its a no klli shelter. If I adopted a pet I would get it from the pound rather then a breeder. I hope someday you do get enough money to adopt a dog and gice it a loving home. I tiink you will make a wonder pet owner.

I hope a nice family had adopted him.:( I really like that dog and haven't forgotten about him all these years. I want to have a backyard where my dog could run around, but since I live in an apartment, I don't have that. Thanks for your response, shaggin.:)

I understand how you feel cheerfulnuts! dogs sometimes act like humans that it could melt our hearts with their staring eyes full of words they wish to utter if only they could. I hope you can adopt the dog one day. For sure, the dog will be happy to have a new home again.

There's something about this dog that made him special to me. His face was warm and gentle. He didn't go away when we hugged him (like some dogs do). He enjoyed our presence. Sadly, I don't think he's alive now. He was nine years old when we saw him, and that was many years ago. I just wish that he had been adopted and had lived a happy life.
